Life is busy for Alex Mery & The Townsmen bassist Kara Hartzell. In addition to her band’s meteoric rise to prominence in the local scene, and the trio’s budding success outside of the Valley — hello, summer tour — she’s been hard at work on a side project alongside a fellow folkster, New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Zach Russack.
Last week, VICTIM frontman Cris Moser reached out to me with an offer to drop by one of the band’s practices, hang out, and hear some new material before it’s released to the public. I’m always down for an adventure, so I gladly and quickly accepted.

In our pledge to reach more of our scene than ever in 2017, we’re making a point to reach out more to you, People of the Underground, to see what you have going on. Obviously, that includes anything released by those of you who are musicians.
You’ve already seen our picks for best festivals and live performers. Now, Dustin and I return to tell you who we think put out the best albums in 2016.

Warren North hits us with an infectious piano hook right away on “Café,” a nice cup of coffee that provides a taste of what we can expect from the singer-songwriter’s forthcoming EP, “Game of Love.”
Philly’s The Band of Rivals has been working on new music, recently premiering a pair of new songs for Throwback Thursday Philly.
Throwback Thursday Philly is an online publication started by music writer Caitlin Phillips which, in addition to “chronicling the city’s unique connections to the music industry,” highlights current artists by giving them a platform for interviews and new music.
The Band of Rivals played a pair of Den Sessions of new songs: “Her,” a low-key, groovy lament of days gone by, and “The Devil and Daniel Johnston,” an up-tempo foot-stomper that recalls the best of vintage country and folk. Both songs feature the five-piece at their tightest, with Sean Cos’s soulful baritone and Abbey Mertz’ versatile violin leading the charge on both tunes.
We’ve included the video for the latter below. For the full Throwback Thursday Philly piece, follow the link.
