VIDEO: Not For Coltrane’s Monday Night Party at The Funhouse

We’re lucky enough to live in an area where A) live music happens seven nights a week and B) the vast majority of the time, the performers are high-quality.

Such was the case Monday night at The Funhouse, where Not For Coltrane (Michael Duck) performed a blend of covers and originals. It was just him and an acoustic guitar, and it made for a Monday night full of good songs, stories, and a dash of humor.

I took a break from photos and opted to take some video instead. Enjoy part of the performance!

PHOTOS: Soul Folks and Not For Coltrane at Godfrey Daniels

Fact: The first time I set foot into the City of Bethlehem was as a Moravian College freshman in 2006.

Fact: Last night was the first time in those ten years where I had attended a show at Godfrey Daniels.

I am not proud that it took me so long to visit a venue that has been a mainstay in our music community for 40 years. Rather, I point this out to say that Soul Folks and Not For Coltrane definitely made it worth the wait.

When you visit Godfrey Daniels, there is a very pronounced focus on the music. It is a listening room, where the entire audience is there to engage with the musicians. Likewise, the musicians engage back by means of storytelling and supreme musical talent.

Highlighted by originals, covers, special appearances, and a rousing, unexpected folk finale of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin & Juice,” Soul Folks and Not For Coltrane combined their powers to make Saturday night a memorable experience. It certainly won’t be another ten years before I’m back at Godfrey Daniels.

Chili With a Side of Great Tunes at Saturday’s Spring on the Southside

Could Saturday be the Valley’s most ridiculously awesome day of music in recent memory?

We’ve told you about the great shows coming up this Saturday, which include most of our Can’t-Miss Shows of the Week. Now, fill your afternoon (and your stomach) with one more event during the day.

Spring on the Southside, an all-ages event featuring music, art, food, and fun, takes place this Saturday, April 23 in South Bethlehem. Three local artists will perform on the South Bethlehem Greenway’s Godfrey Daniels stage beginning at 11 a.m., including Dave Fry (11 a.m.), Not For Coltrane, featuring bassist Shawn Cay and drummer Dave Deubler of the Acoustic Bite Trio (12 p.m.); and Jack Murray and the Midnight Creeps (1 p.m.). Music will be followed immediately by the annual chili pepper eating contest at 2 p.m.

The event is also famous locally for its SouthSide’s Best Chili Cook-off, which will feature more than 15 varieties of chili, ranging from mild, spicy, and five-alarm chili to vegetarian versions. Chili tastings will take place from 12-2 p.m., and participants are encouraged to get their Chili Tasting Passports in advance at artsquest.org.

For more information on the entire event, visit SouthSideArtsDistrict.com.
