Lisa’s Saturday Night: Start Making Sense at Zoellner Arts Center

In July, we reported on Start Making Sense’s upcoming show at Zoellner Arts Center. The Talking Heads tribute was to re-create the band’s 1984 film, “Stop Making Sense,” alongside an encore of additional Talking Heads covers.

Last week, while chatting about LVU, I asked Lisa what her plans were for Saturday. She informed me that she already had tickets to Saturday’s tribute.

At that moment, I thought back to July, and I thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it be great to cover that show?”

So, long story short, the folks over at Zoellner were super accommodating, and Lisa went there and was blown away by Start Making Sense’s incredible performance. When I asked about it on Monday, she told me that it just might have been even better than The Talking Heads themselves. This is consistent with what I’ve heard all around about Saturday night’s show — it has received nothing but glowing reviews. Kudos to the band and to the folks at Zoellner, who worked together to produce an incredible show in all respects.

Lisa, as she tends to do, captured the moment well with some great photos. I’m happy to share those with you right here. Enjoy!

Michael Meade Provides Hope on ‘One of Those Days’

Artist: Michael Meade
Song: One of Those Days
Genre: Acoustic rock
Release Date TBD

Everyday Man” Michael Meade is back with new music, releasing a soothing piece of Americana with new single, “One of Those Days.”

With a gentle guitar melody and a folksy baritone, Meade relates to listeners going through life’s everyday trials by first asking, “Did you ever have one of those days you should have stayed in bed?” Lyrically, Meade acknowledges the part of the human condition that leaves us in a funk when nothing is going right, telling the story with a comforting, understanding fatherly presence.

“One of Those Days’” hopeful acoustic guitar tones are equal parts catchy and comforting, lending support to Meade’s vocals as if to sonically communicate, “Whatever you’re going through, it will be OK.” “One of Those Days” is good listening for anyone who needs a pick-me-up, as it shines a ray of light on days when it’s difficult to see through the clouds.

Hear the world premiere of “One of Those Days” on Monday’s season premiere of The Quinn Spinn, 6 p.m. ET on YouTube with replays on SoundCloud, iTunes, and Lehigh Valley Underground.

PHOTOS: The Originals Music Series Returns With Carefree Constant and Julius

The official start of fall is less than a week away, and it’s a good time to make a new run. For The Originals Music Series, they did so by inviting Carefree Constant and Julius out for the first show of the season.

Carefree Constant took the stage first. The Whitehall-based foursome have put a progressive spin on the reggae rock genre, which lends a heavier edge to the band’s sounds and provides good contrast and variety from the group’s more laid back tunes.

Next up was Julius, who always brings a fun energy to the Club Gravity stage. The singer-songwriter reliably rocked setlist staples like “Sunlit Day” and “Better Life,” while mixing in new and unreleased tracks.

Want more rock? Starting Thursday, September 29, The Originals Music Series will return to a weekly schedule at Club Gravity inside Chicago Restaurant. Keep tabs on the Series’ Facebook page for details!

Magnificent Birds of Prey Let Us Know It’s OK to ‘Start Over’

Artist: Magnificent Birds of Prey
Song: Start Over
Released: Aug. 1, 2016
Genre: Alternative Rock

Philly’s Magnificent Birds of Prey soar on a mid-tempo ode to new beginnings with “Start Over,” using tight four-part vocal harmonies and percussion that is off-and-running from the jump to create a tender, yet powerful anthem.

Highlighted by the versatile Lyle Kelch Jr.’s vocal performance – which starts light and sweet, and builds up over four minutes to a commanding, gravely climax – “Start Over” gives us permission to wipe away the fear associated with leaving our pain behind, and encourages us to re-create our pathway to becoming who we need to be.

Check out the four-piece’s latest effort on their SoundCloud page!

A Night on Northampton Street

Oh, Easton. You always give me more than I bargain for.

My night began a hair after 8 p.m. when, after I found parking just off the circle, I walked over to Connexions Gallery to catch Shawn Cav Ensemble’s latest performance. I was surprised, then, when I walked into the gallery to find it empty, except for a couple of pets and, of course, the artwork hanging throughout the room.

As I wandered back, I noticed the sound of Dan DeChellis’ keyboard getting louder. I then stumbled upon a back room leading to an outside courtyard which, lo and behold, was the venue for this evening’s performances.

I have to say, I really dig this performance space. It has a summer night’s ambiance which was enhanced by the tunes being brought forth on this muggy night. I arrived for a few selections of DeChellis’ piano mastery to open the evening before things changed over to Shawn Cav Ensemble.

The Ensemble, as always, brought its best, performing a mix of selections off of its new album, “Glass Houses,” as well as some unreleased tunes. I always find myself blown away by saxophonist Matt Truscott in particular, whose improv ability is some of the best you’ll find in the Valley or elsewhere.

After a while, I looked at my phone to find that it was 9:30. Admittedly, the Bayou-style humidity had me feeling a bit sluggish, and my ill feeling was probably compounded by the fact that I hadn’t eaten anything since meeting my sister at Mesa for lunch earlier in the day. Realizing that my busy schedule had kept me from sustenance for much of the evening, I decided to address that, moving onto the next stop: Two Rivers Brewing Company, where LVU’s fellow Mega Power Dustin Schoof was playing with his acoustic duo, Blue Jean.

I walked uphill for a few blocks, deciding too late that driving would have been a better option, to join Blue Jean mid-set. Upon arriving, I found out two things:

  • Acoustic Kitty Project was playing just down the street at Porters’ Pub.
  • The kitchen at Two Rivers closes at 10 p.m., and it was 9:52.

Upon hearing that second point, I quickly grabbed a menu and ordered the first thing that caught my eye – a buffalo chicken flatbread that, as it turned out, was bangin’. I wolfed that down alongside glass after glass of water – yes, I went to a brewery, and all I drank was water – as I enjoyed a mix of covers and originals from Blue Jean. I also briefly caught up with Dustin for a few minutes, discussing things that only we Mega Powers would understand… for now. #foreshadowing

003

After hanging out at Two Rivers for a while, I settled up and decided that I WASN’T. FINISHED. YET! (I love doing that…)

I embarked on the next phase of the evening’s journey, walking a few blocks down (and further away from my car) to Porters’, where AKP was in the midst of an intimate trio show.

004

As always, the music – another healthy mix of covers and originals – was on-point, but what stuck out to me even more at this stop were the conversations I had while I was there.

Talking to those in attendance, I realized that there is a great hope for our music scene, and a gratitude for the fact that things really seem to be coming together for everyone involved. Folks seem appreciative of the fact that people like Dustin and I provide meaningful, hyper-local media coverage of the Lehigh Valley’s true music scene – that is to say, the artists and people who make it what it is every single day.

It made me even more grateful to do what I do through Lehigh Valley Underground. The thing I’ve come to understand is that this scene has, for quite a while, been in need of a unifying force to connect the dots and help place emphasis on the hidden talent that is rampant throughout our region. It is an honor and a privilege to be one of the people to facilitate that, while getting to meet great people and enjoy the varied and many talents of this area’s performers multiple times per week.

As I said, I got more than I thought I would out of this night in Easton at the outset. Of course, I was expecting a nice time and some great tunes. That’s par for the course. In addition, however, I had a spring in my step. As I walked back to the car just after midnight, I knew that I had received another inspiring reminder of why we do what we do at LVU.

Marc Ambrosia to Leave ‘Footprints’ on Haverford Music Festival

Looking to take a day trip on this hot Saturday? If you head down to Haverford Music Festival, you just might see a familiar face…

Marc Ambrosia, whose album, “Footprints,” received glowing reviews in the early days of LVU, and who has been a featured guest on The Quinn Spinn, will be appearing with his band at the sixth annual festival, presented by ACME Markets. Ambrosia and his band will headline the festival’s WHHS Eagle Road Stage this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

Ambrosia will share the same festival bill as national touring acts, including Grammy nominee Lisa Loeb, jazz singer Sasha Dobson, longtime touring act The Figgs, and Italian-born singer-songwriter Giada J.

“I’m thrilled to be taking the stage with my band at Haverford Music Festival. They’re wonderful musicians and I’m lucky to have them,” Ambrosia told LVU. “I’m also incredibly honored to be playing this event with other amazing acts like Lisa Loeb, Sasha Dobson, and Giada J, among others. It’s going to be a full day of really great artistry. I’m looking forward to it!”
