On ‘Meadowlands,’ Hartzell and Russack Sound Like Folk Giants

Life is busy for Alex Mery & The Townsmen bassist Kara Hartzell. In addition to her band’s meteoric rise to prominence in the local scene, and the trio’s budding success outside of the Valley — hello, summer tour — she’s been hard at work on a side project alongside a fellow folkster, New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Zach Russack.

The duo recently released “Meadowlands,” a gentle, swaying ballad that calls to mind a summer’s breeze rolling through the tall grasses of the song’s eponymous marshland, all while a golden-hued sun slowly sets in the distance.

The tune features Russack’s intricate and versatile guitar work, including a bluesy solo that begs the listener to hang on every note. The singer-songwriter’s heartfelt baritone is complemented by the tender soprano of Hartzell, whose bass work on “Meadowlands” gives the track its backbone.

Take a listen below, and look out for both artists this summer in a city near you, when Russack joins Alex Mery & The Townsmen on their Southern Exposure tour.
