Town Mountain’s ‘New Freedom Blues’ Fuses Styles, Tackles Heavy Topics

Asheville, NC-based bluegrass band Town Mountain have released “New Freedom Blues,” their critically-acclaimed sixth studio album produced at renowned Echo Mountain Studios in their hometown.

The 11-track release is generally upbeat, even when tackling heavier topics. The title and opening track provides a spirited introduction, featuring the chops of banjo player Jesse Langlais and fiddler Bobby Britt, all while tackling the melancholy subject of not knowing which path to take following a breakup.

Never afraid to speak their minds, the band made sure to include a couple of tracks that tackle the current state of the nation and the world. “Life and Debt” calls out the financial inequality prevalent in today’s world, all while featuring some nice accordion accents that add a touch of New Orleans flair to the track. “Witch Trials” offers commentary on free thought – or lack thereof – in a society that often has trouble seeing all humans as equal.

Town Mountain shows its willingness to bend the rules of traditional bluegrass on “New Freedom Blues” by incorporating other styles into their sound. “One Drop in the Bottle” breaks into country territory, with a splash of pop in the tune’s noteworthy, accessible hook. Later, closing track “Down Low” presents a southern rock edge through the sound of Robert Greer’s wailing guitar.
