It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Alex Mery & The Townsmen. After releasing 2017’s five-track EP “Folklore,” the folk-punk outfit has been writing and making plans for the future.
Now, the future has arrived, and we have our first taste of it with the band’s newest single, “Promised Land.”
“Promised Land” starts out with an Americana feel, with the strum of Mery’s acoustic taking us into the first verse. The angst in Mery’s voice is as potent as ever, as the singer expresses inner conflict over feelings of stagnation and being uninspired by the company he keeps.
As “Promised Land” progresses, the track seems to evolve, keeping a folk-inspired story arc at its foundation as gritty, punk-influenced guitar work rises to prominence. All the while, the track’s tone becomes brighter as it progresses into the bridge, where some inventive fills from drummer Matt Anderson take us into a triumphant final chorus that suggests, perhaps, that our protagonist has broken free of life’s merry-go-round in search of something better.
