WATCH: Elastic Justice Likes to Have Fun… and Make Us Think
Is Elastic Justice’s new single, “Ram Raid at the Palace of Wonder,” about a cockney bank job, or about mankind’s inability to explain the wonders of the universe?
Why can’t it be both?
Either way — and no matter which meaning aligns more with your individual journey — what we have on our hands is a fun, raucous rock song, and the second release from the band’s forthcoming album, The Run Out Groove.
Like the album’s other tracks, “Ram Raid” was created across several different time zones: Elastic Justice’s members are scattered across the Western world — from Brighton, U.K.; to Miami; to San Francisco.
Still, distance doesn’t get in the way of their shared passion and creative process.
“The way we write and record now is not that different from when we all use to house-share in London, when we’d wander into each other’s bedrooms with musical ideas. We still do that, but now, the rooms are digital ones,” said songwriter Paul Sands. “Typically, I’ll write a demo here in Brighton and spin it to Lou in Miami, who’ll reshape it and add more layers to it. Then sometimes, it goes to Alex in San Fran for production polish, and might make its way back to Brighton for finishing touches, with Jon adding backing vocals. After a couple of laps of the planet, we end up with a version we’re all happy with.”
The accompanying video for “Ram Raid at the Palace of Wonder” features stills of unlikely convicts from 100 years ago, from the Tyne and Wear Archives — and every face tells a deeper story.
“I wrote ‘Ram Raid at the Palace of Wonder’ when I was a long way from the UK – in a Japanese attic in fact – but wanted to plug into the heritage of British writers like Ian Dury,” Sands noted. “Songs that are funny on one level but also have
something to say.”
