Owning your voice is a powerful thing. As artists, you know, that when you sing a song or create a beat, that you can inspire a movement with that rhythm, that changes lives for people.  

You have seen it, time and time again. 

The eyes get lit up, the movement of the body, the soul awakens and the beat moves through them (and you). 

When you look out into the audience and feel the power of the music swaying the crowd, you are reminded that music can heal people. 

You can express emotions and bring out feelings when you sing and when you create. We know it’s not just in the words or in the tone of voice, but it’s in the vibration of the sound moving through you. There’s a purity of the light that moves through the world through music. A scared song that is singing for humanity. 

Now, we know this to be true, but if you grew up like I did, somewhere along the way you had to grit in to own this vibration in you. I grew up in an environment that diminished my voice. Although if you ask my parents, my teachers, they would claim that wasn’t the case. However, still to this day, I hear the voices in my head when I lean in to create or sing, they say things like “Stop singing so loud” “This is just child’s play” “You’ll never make it as an artist” “Get out of the fairy tale, Colleen, and come back to real life” . 

Did anything like this happen to you? Maybe not, which is amazing. But you can imagine that over time, this continuous mantra of inadequacy pulsed into my being. 

I would get up to sing, hearing the voices. 

I would step into dance, hearing the voices. 

I would pick up my saxophone, hearing the voices. 

Even today when I pick up my drum, I still doubt that I can actually play. 

Isn’t that just crazy? 

For you it might be something different.
Maybe you question how you look on stage? 

Or will anyone listen? 

Or can I really hold pace in this band? 

Can I really make and produce this album? 

The doubt creeps in. The doubt starts to build. The doubt is around us all the time. 

So what now? We obviously do it anyways. We step in, we conquer and we move through. 

Does it mean it’s easy, of course not. Shoot if it was everyone would be doing it, right? 

I want to remind you today… 

When we are artists, the music is us as we are the music. 

Your unique creative edge and flow is yours. Your beat, your mission. 

Through the impact, comes the money. 

When we work in the music industry, we are drawn to this industry not for the money but for the art itself. 

These are the things that we need to remember as we move forward into this next level in humanity. 

We’re coming to a crossroads, in life and in business. A crossroads in our creative flow and in the way we show up in the world. A crossroads of, do we speak up or do we diminish ourselves and conform. A crossroads of, do we sacrifice our uniqueness to fit in or do we stand tall and own it? Only you can determine this for yourself. 

A couple questions to consider. 

Can you lead again with your heart open?

Can you connect in deeper within yourself to create music and to create a life through the vibration of your truth?

Can you  fully own your messaging and the words that move through your body as you explore this next evolution of who you are? 

Can you go back to the innocence in how you started? Can you remember who you were then?
Can you? 

The truth is never an easy road, but it’s the road. Your truth, your impact, your mission.
It’s time to reclaim it all, do you have the courage though? 

Will it be worth it? Absolutely. But like the journey of how you got here, it’s going to take grit. It’s going to take you stepping in and maybe through that you will lose people, dynamics will shift, you will see through the veil, but remembering it’s all in the alignment of your truth. Maybe you’ll also get some content from it. Some pure hearted music. Closing this out, remember, you have a unique edge and it’s yours. It has been perfectly mastered for your movement in the world, no one else is like you. The magical beat that moves through your soul, there is where the answers lie. Trust yourself and everything else will fall into place.
