PHOTOS: Dead:Stop, Next to None, and Another Day Dawns at The Originals Music Series (with special guest Mike Portnoy)

Some nights on the music scene make us realize why we do what we do.

OK, to be fair, we’ve had quite a few of those lately. However, tonight reinforced for us that there’s much to look forward to around our Valley, year-round, and that any night can be amazing.

Let’s start with Dead:Stop. The heavy rock/hardcore band started the evening with a dash of punk edge and infectious energy that got the folks in attendance — many of them among our music scene’s younger demographic — up and moving.

After that came Next to None, another young, but wickedly talented band whose progressive metal flair is perhaps only rivaled by its stage presence. Their genre, of course, is not a surprise — the band’s backline includes Max Portnoy on drums, whose father, Mike, is the former drummer for Dream Theater.

Speaking of Mike Portnoy, he was in the house, and would join in on a special treat after his son’s band finished its official set. Portnoy, as well as members of Next to None and local hard rock band Another Day Dawns (who we’ve recently seem somewhere… can’t put our finger on it, though…) participated in an open jam. Musicians rotated in and out for about 45 minutes, playing a jukebox worth of hard rock and metal hits and ending with a full company version of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”

Through it all, the packed house and sense of enthusiasm at Chicago Restaurant’s Club Gravity also provided good vibes. With so much youth in the room and onstage, it was easy to dispel the notion that the younger generation doesn’t “get it.” Not only do they get it — but they are just as good at making music as folks twice their age.

The future is bright for our Valley’s music scene, and for every artist who took the stage on Thursday night.

PHOTOS: Deprived and September Silence at The Originals Music Series

Don’t let the band names fool you — rock was abundant on Thursday night at The Originals Music Series, and it was anything but silent.

We started our evening with Deprived, who delivered on all things heavy music from metal, to punk, to even some grunge (nice Nirvana cover, guys). It was a great start to the night, setting the tone for what was to come.

A bit later, it was time for September Silence to retake the stage at Chicago Restaurant’s Club Gravity. Earlier this year, the band debuted at this very venue, and they returned sounding tight and got plenty of heads moving to the music.

PHOTOS: Whiskey Hollow Debuts at Club Gravity

Friday night was a bonus night of music at Chicago Restaurant’s Club Gravity. After a Thursday night that saw Musos return to The Originals Music Series, the Fyre & Ice Show kicked off July with a special treat — the debut of country party band Whiskey Hollow.

The evening was started by blues duo Crossroads Duo, who brought their mix of tight covers and originals to the Club Gravity stage. The pair sounded as good as ever, and served as a great warmup for the party to come.

After a brief changeover, it was time for Whiskey Hollow to take the stage for the first time. The country five-piece kicked things up a notch with its big sound and engaging stage presence.

PHOTOS: The Second Annual Lehigh Valley Musicians Social

In addition to good vibes and a healthy exchange of ideas, Thursday night at The Originals Music Series’ Lehigh Valley Musicians Social featured a stellar lineup of musicians.

The night kicked off with Scott Marshall & Marshall’s Highway, who delivered yet another signature performance of rock, country, blues and everything in between. They were followed by Valdez, a talented foursome from Philly, and Pinnacle, who capped off the evening with their first performance since 2014. Each band shared a distinctive sound all its own with those in attendance, making this a showcase to remember.

We have some great photos compiled by LVU contributor Lisa Robinson, who did a fantastic job filling in behind the camera while I manned our table. Take a look!

PHOTOS: The Phoenix Bridge at The Originals Music Series

Through the chaos of last-minute preparations for Saturday’s Sixth Annual PBS39 BrewFest (for which I was the event chair), and deciding that this was also the perfect week to move into my new apartment (I’m insane), I knew that I needed to get out on the scene at some point this week. So, I went for ol’ reliable — The Originals Music Series.

Originally, I was planning on snapping photos of the evening’s two bands, Mind Grenade and the Phoenix Bridge. However, growing pains in my new place of residence — i.e.; putting in a maintenance call for the washing machine — caused me to arrive just as Mind Grenade was wrapping up their set. I’m bummed that I missed them, but I would like to make a personal appeal to the dudes from Mind Grenade: Let me know about some upcoming shows, and I promise I’ll come out to cover one.

I did, however, get to hear The Phoenix Bridge live for the first time. This is a band that I’ve heard much about over the past few months, and I certainly was not disappointed. Frontman Patrick Leaver’s charisma was immediately evident, and, as a die-hard fan of Our Lady Peace and Raine Maida, I particularly marked out for (pro wrestling terminology for “thoroughly appreciated”) his use of a megaphone. On the whole, the band was as tight as can be, with their sound reminiscent of many of rock’s greats.

PHOTOS: Site Unknown, Dissension Rising, Autoerotica and Alpha Zero Three at The Originals Music Series

Thursday night at The Originals Music Series was a reminder why those of us on the local music scene do what we do. Not only was it a night showcasing great talent, but it was a night of togetherness. It was a night highlighted by the community that we all continue to create together. Friends, family, other bands, local music fans, and even Neue Regel Radio was in the house to support our local scene here in the Lehigh Valley.

The bands were all on-point, too. Whether it was Site Unknown’s emotionally jarring cover of Purple Rain, Ireland’s Dissension Rising and their hard-hitting rock, Autoerotica’s incredible presence, or the impressive debut of Alpha Zero Three, there was much to enjoy musically throughout the night.
