Review: Shawn Cav Ensemble – Glass Houses

Artist: Shawn Cav Ensemble
Album: Glass Houses (Pre-order)
Release Date: Jul. 30, 2016
Genre: Jazz Fusion

On July 30, break out your good headphones and listen to everything happening on Shawn Cav Ensemble’s “Glass Houses.” The eclectic Easton quartet showcases its musicianship and improvisational abilities to speak volumes without saying a word.

The band displays its ability to move between ideas – and even genres – on the new release. A perfect example is opening track, “Four Years in a Box,” which is underscored by groovy rhythms and a tradeoff between Steve Collins’ guitar and Matt Truscott’s tenor sax that walks a tightrope between jazz and rock.

Another highlight is “Faces,” a funk-fueled track with a hooky bass line where Collins and Truscott both take turns speaking lyrically through their instruments. In contrast, title track “Glass Houses” is mellow in a way that ties the effort together, revolving around Shawn Cav’s bass to build a climax and achieve the EP’s resolution.

Easton Heritage Day #3: Easton Rocks into the Night

Easton’s 40th Annual Heritage Day is in the books! Thousands of Valley residents came out on Saturday to hear great music from a variety of local artists, enjoy a taste of history with the re-enactment of the reading of the Declaration of Indpendence at Centre Square, and have some all-around summer fun.

As promised, we stuck around into the night and caught many more great musical performances before the evening was through. These included the Bank Street Band from Easton’s School of Rock, who performed a selection of stirring American standards and contemporary songs during the festival’s fireworks display.

Enjoy the photos below! Kudos to all those who put on a successful event, and thanks for having LVU out to capture it all!

Easton Heritage Day #2: So. Much. Music.

The past few hours have been a wild time, as I’ve raced from one side of Easton’s Centre Square to the other to capture all of the great music happening downtown (with the occasional refreshment or restroom break in between).

I’ve come a long way, and by no means am I finished yet. Heritage Day is in the process of proceeding down to the riverfront for tonight’s shows and fireworks. Of course, you can be sure that I’ll be sticking around until things are finished going boom.

In the meantime, here’s what’s captured of the great performers I’ve seen so far, in order of appearance. I’ll be back with more after the conclusion of Heritage Day.

I’m going to be in Easton all day, and you’re coming with me!

We’ll be capturing the essence of Easton Heritage Day 2016 here and on social media, and we don’t want you to miss a thing! So, check in with the site every so often throughout the day, and stay tuned to LVU on Facebook (live video, perhaps?), Twitter, and Instagram for updates, performances, and more.

And, if you happen to see a particularly buff gentleman walking around in a Quinn Spinn t-shirt with a camera, feel free to say hi!

Easton Heritage Day Celebrates 40th Anniversary on Sunday

Since 1976, Easton has celebrated its lasting legacy with Heritage Day, a festival originally held to commemorate the reading of the Declaration of Independence in the city. On Sunday, Easton will celebrate the event’s 40th Anniversary.

A key highlight will take place at noon, when re-enactors will take to the steps of the Centre Square courthouse to read the Declaration of Independence once more. Easton was one of three cities – the others being Philadelphia and Trenton, NJ – where our nation’s founding document was read aloud in Colonial times.

“(Heritage Day) is a great time, and the history is very important to the festival,” said board member Dustin Schoof. “It’s a day of history, music, and it’s a nice cross-section of different things happening.”

Easton native Dan DeChellis is one of many performers for Heritage Day 2016.

In addition to period-appropriate re-enactors and crafters, Heritage Day will feature plenty of modern touches. These include live music from Easton natives Roi & the Secret People, Dan DeChellis, and students from the Easton School of Rock, as well as popular area performers like Dana Gaynor Band, Brian Dean Moore Band, Copperfields, Joyous, and more.

“We have four stages of music starting in the morning, going all the way up until the fireworks and a little bit afterward,” Schoof said. “There isn’t a whole lot of time when there isn’t going to be music, which is always a good thing.”

This year’s music lineup has been spearheaded by Carter Lansing, a well-known Easton musician and native.

The Man Behind the Music: Carter Lansing spearheaded this year’s Heritage Day lineup.

“Carter is a man of many talents,” Schoof said. “The last two years, he has spearheaded the music. He’s really stepped up to the plate and done a terrific job.”

Heritage Day kicks off at 9:45 a.m. with a combined church service presented by Easton’s Historic Downtown Churches at Riverside Park. The festival itself begins at 11 a.m. on the Heritage Stage at Centre Square, with a re-enactment of town criers arguing independence.

Throughout the day, Heritage Day patrons can enjoy a sampling of food trucks, beer, and children’s activities. The festivities will continue into the evening, with fireworks scheduled for 9:30 p.m. on Larry Holmes Drive. Live music will continue until the festival’s conclusion at 10:30 p.m.

“We’re excited – it’s a lot of work to put this on, but at the end of the day, everyone’s excited and glad to be a part of it,” Schoof said. “We’re really glad to be doing it for 40 years. We hope to do it for 40 more.”

Sunday Thought Series: Take a Deep Breath

We’re in the middle of a transformative summer for Lehigh Valley Underground, and believe me when I say this: we’re just getting warmed up.

However, everyone needs a weekend to catch a breath once in a while. With fired-up grills and cold drinks in my future over the next couple days, this is that weekend.

In a recent conversation with dear friend and nationally-touring country artist John Scargall, we talked about the value of downtime. Time with friends and family gives you balance and perspective, as it reminds you why you work so hard. Many of us are trying to create a better life so we can enjoy more of it. That isn’t to say that we don’t enjoy what we do – for the record, I freakin’ love LVU – but success gives us more time to be present in our personal lives, which is always a good thing.

Traveling from place to place, like I’ll be doing throughout New Jersey today and tomorrow, also gives us time to think. We are able to take a step back, clear our thoughts, and come up with the next piece of the puzzle. It allows us to give a little more thought to what’s coming up, and how we can keep #BuildingBetter through it all.

Needless to say, there’s much on the horizon for us this summer. Of course, we have Musikfest around the corner next month. Before that, though, we have Easton Heritage Day just next weekend. In between, there will be plenty of shows, songs, reviews, and maybe even an announcement or two that I’m having a hard time keeping to myself… J

But… I’ll #GoUnderground again on Tuesday. For now, some yard games, barbecue, and fireworks are going to take me back to a simpler time, and give me the deep breath I need before I charge full steam ahead into the rest of this amazing summer.

Take some time out for yourself this weekend, too. Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

P.S.: This one reminds me of back in the day. Don’t judge me. More importantly, share a song that reminds you of the golden summers of your youth.

PHOTOS: Acoustic Bite Trio at Pearly Baker’s

And so, we complete the trifecta from Saturday night!

After I had my socks thoroughly rocked by Acoustic Kitty Project and Roi & the Secret People at Rivals, and after Lisa had a great time capturing the Allentown Freak Out Fringe Festival, I popped over to Pearly Baker’s, where Acoustic Bite Trio was set to play some”acoustified” favorites.

I was only able to stay for a little while (unfortunately, I had to wake up before 7 a.m. on Sunday), but while I was there, the trio featuring Shawn Cav (bass), Scott Harrington (guitar), and Dave Deubler (drums) ran through a jukebox-worth of hits, both classic and contemporary. It was a nice cap to a fantastic evening of live music.

And, of course, I got a few shots while I was there. They’re below!

PHOTOS: Summer Blowout Show with Roi & the Secret People and Acoustic Kitty Project

In case there was any doubt left, Saturday night at Rivals Sports Bar & Restaurant proved once again that Easton Rocks.

The stage at Rivals was graced by the presence of Acoustic Kitty Project, fronted by Carter Lansing, and Roi & the Secret People, who are currently competing in a MusicBrackets.com music video contest for a $5,000 cash prize.

Both acts performed brilliantly, with Acoustic Kitty Project setting a country rock tone during their hour-plus set. Roi & the Secret People then followed with another trademark performance that blended sounds from the rock, pop, and progressive spheres.

Hats off to both bands for another enjoyable night of music (and for the stylish hats of each band’s frontman). Enjoy the photos!
