LISTEN: Katie Mal Gets Us ‘Caught Up’ in Our Feelings

Have you ever experienced a heartbreak so real, that even the smallest reminder prevents you from moving on?

Katie Mal crafted her new single, “Caught Up,” 3-4 years ago, as she was trying her hardest to recover from her first “real, hard breakup.” The raw honesty of the lyrics, paired well with a steady-driving garage rock soundscape, give us all the room we need to process our own pain — even if we’re the ones choosing to hold on to the memories.

“’Caught Up’ came from a really personal place—those moments when even the smallest things, like rain on a window or a box of their stuff, can keep you from moving on,” Katie said. “It was one of those times where writing helped me process what I was feeling.”

The Toronto-based songwriter started with the lyrics, later refining the melody and guitar parts to develop the finished product we’re enjoying today.

“I really wanted to release this song, because I love how the final product turned out,” she said. “It feels raw and real, and I hope people can connect with it.”

UMC20: The Musical Harvest Continues (Oct. 11, 2022)

With every week that goes by, the independent musicians of Earth continue bringing the HEAT.

It means we’ll never run out of choice cuts to feature on UMC20 (and elsewhere within this wild and wacky UMC ecosystem). And, while that lends us to make tough calls as to what to include, and where to slot each submission onto the playlist, rest assured that we’d rather have too much than too little.

If you’re a musician reading this, the best way to get on our radar is to submit your tunes here. And, while you head over to the forms and tell us everything we need to know about your music, enjoy this week’s edition of UMC20 for inspiration!

NashLive! Presents: Greasediver, The Mad Sugars, and Forts Like Vana at The 5 Spot

NashLive! will be back at The 5 Spot on Thursday, July 21 — and it will be a rock and roll party!

Out of the flooded, beer can strewn basements Nashville stumbles Greasediver. Emmett Rozelle sings and plays most of the instruments on their 2021 album, In the Wake of the Past, but he couldn’t have done it without the help of his friends. His partners in crime include but are not limited to: Zach D’Amico (engineering, production, drums), Peter Piscitelli (bass guitar), and Ian Colt (artwork, cover design, and the latest in a long line of celebrated Trench Dwellers).

The Mad Sugars are the songwriting vehicle of Adam Lawrence, combining the dance rock of Franz Ferdinand, the garage punk of The Hives, and the vocal harmonies and party vibes of The B-52s as a backdrop for stories of nightlife misadventures. Hailing originally from NJ, and later NYC, Adam then relocated from New York to Nashville in 2017 and re-formed the band, releasing Reboot in October of 2021, containing reimagined renditions of older songs for the new Nashville audience. In recent years, Adam has placed his songs in TV shows such as The Crazy Ex-GirlfriendChicago Fire, and Search Party, and is finishing work on the band’s first full length album, to be released in the fall of 2022.

Forts Like Vana are known around town for their lively stage performances and raw, yet polished sound. In fact, they bring the fire every time they join us for a NashLive! show!

Tickets for this one are $10 at the door, and you must be 21 or older to enter. The fun starts at 9 p.m., and we hope you’ll join us!
