Beyond the Valley: Liverpool’s Royzy Rothschild Spits Fire on “Eminem Effect”

One thing you can count on every Monday on The Quinn Spinn is great indie music, of any genre, from artists near and far. Sometimes, we opt to play international artists on our “worldwide” show.

We’ll do that tomorrow, guaranteed, when Royzy Rothschild makes his Quinn Spinn debut. Royzy sent us his new single, “Eminem Effect” featuring Kay Francis, this week. It’s a big-sounding track, and the kind of hip hop that always has a welcome home on Quinn Spinn programming. You can find it on tomorrow’s show, to be made available on SoundCloud, iTunes, and right here on Lehigh Valley Underground.

Beyond the Valley: About That Ayoinmotion Guy You Heard Yesterday…

One of my favorite artists from The Quinn Spinn‘s previous run is New York-based hip hop artist Ayoinmotion. You may recognize that name, because you heard his song, “She’s Leaving” on yesterday’s episode.

I had the privilege of catching Ayo’s live show a couple years ago at Webster Hall, where he opened for Talib Kweli during the NY Loves J.Dilla Tribute Show. The man and his band can straight-up perform. They are among the most talented, engaging artists I’ve ever had the privilege of seeing live.

Ayo is also very globally-conscious. A native of Lagos, Nigeria, he also spent time Flint, Michigan before arriving to New York. In response to Flint’s recent water crisis, Ayoinmotion performed a benefit show a couple weeks ago, raising more than $500 for the children of Flint.

Rod McCoy has spent the past few years building his reputation as both a performer and supporter of hip hop that deviates from the mainstream norm. His most recent work, “Smoke & Murals,” might be the strongest example of his efforts to date.

Slick production, mellow instrumentals and clever, thought-provoking verses highlight the seven track EP. Whether he’s offering poignant social commentary (“Intro”; “Urban Culture”), declaring his love for cannabis (“Funky Junkie”), or offering smooth motivational verses (“Conquer the World”), you can’t help but hang on every word Rod says. His delivery demands your attention, no matter the subject.

“Smoke and Murals” also boasts a number of great features. Neo-soul singer Candace K offers her rich vocals to “Funky Junkie,” and supports solid verses from Rod, Abib Jahleel, No Suh Foster and Truez on “Souls 4 $ale.” Singer Ron Shirley II offers a soulful refrain on the love song, “My Queen & My Mistress,” while Frank P.’s quick flow shines in the rapper’s verse on album closer, “La$t Day.”

On “Conquer the World,” Rod McCoy boldly states that “there’s no limit to who we are.” Perhaps that line is equal parts motivational and autobiographical, as it is clear on “Smoke & Murals” that Rod McCoy is a hip hop artist with limitless potential.
