Take powerful lyrical imagery over richly-layered, dynamic indie pop soundscapes. Season it with some clear and present jazz sensibilities, and you have “Here & Now,” the debut EP from Philly singer-songwriter, Cubbage.

The exciting thing about “Here & Now” is that it’s unique to anything on the radio right now; all the while, we could see any one of these four songs holding up well in just about any major market. A track like closer “Beautiful Night” – a smooth party anthem featuring a fantastic guest verse from rapper Damiano the Don – is as accessible and catchy as a song gets.

Beyond that, we get some different looks at Cubbage as an artist on “Here & Now.” “Dawn” is a tender, poetic ballad featuring some lively acoustic guitar work, while the beginning minimalist, effects-laden harmonies that open “Disappear” are underscored by electronic beats that ascend into a bright groundswell, with jazz keys added in as an extra, vibrant layer.
