The opening guitar wail of Nicole Boggs & The Reel’s new single, “No Good News,” sets an ominous tone: one befitting of the modern times in which we live — which seem to carry more than their share of fear and uncertainty.

The band tackles that very topic head on, lamenting the struggle that persists for human beings pressured to carry forth and persevere, despite a seemingly constant, media-driven barrage of misery. Tense guitar accents — and later, a howling guitar solo — are colored with a shade of post-grunge nihilism. All the while, Boggs’ hypnotic delivery gives us pause to wonder if we have any true autonomy — or if we’re already bought and sold, courtesy of corporate interests.
