LISTEN: On ‘Drown in the Desert,’ Mary Jennings Helps Us Weather the Storm

Following life’s storms, we all have a choice: let go of the pain and find oneself, or stay stuck where we are.

Mary Jennings explores this theme of resilience — even through catastrophe — on her latest single, “Drown in the Desert.”

Building on the socio-political themes of Jennings’ previous single, “Take A Number,” “Drown in the Desert” was inspired by Jennings’ experiences at Burning Man in 2023, which became infamous for the rare, torrential desert rain that caused mass evacuations and many stranded individuals at the festival. The single begins with a calm, ethereal electropop sensibility — meant to mirror the desert landscape’s typical tranquility — before tension builds and washes down on us. Jennings found the desert storm to be an apt metaphor for life’s more challenging moments, when we find ourselves overwhelmed by emotions, circumstances, or both.

“Drown in the Desert” was co-produced by Ryan Youmans, and is the second single from Jennings’ forthcoming EP, set to arrive this summer. Immerse yourself in this one below!

LISTEN: With ‘be kind & rewind,’ znels Lets Us Re-live the Good Parts

No matter how red the flags become, our minds like to reflect on our past relationships with a fondness that can seem downright delusional.

Ohio-based alt-pop artist znels offers us this view through rose-colored glasses on his latest single, “be kind & rewind.” Supported by an airy, pastel soundscape — think along the lines of 5 Seconds of Summer, with a dash of Owl City — we get to fall in love with our exes all over again.

Or, at least the things about them we actually liked

“Have you ever wanted to jump back to a moment in time and just stay there? ‘be kind & rewind’ is a nostalgic daydream for when everything felt perfect,” znels said. “It’s a breakup song for when things turn out to be so much different than you wanted, but you stay a little bit delulu by living in your head and replaying the good parts.”

It may be brand new (released May 10), but the release “be kind & rewind” has been a long time coming. In fact, it’s the song that inspired znels to begin releasing music under his current project.

“It took two years to get to this point of feeling like it was ready to be released. I spent so much time with the song to get things like the lyrics, word choices, key, and BPM right,” znels said. “I produced and released my first two singles independently, but for this one, I was lucky to work with producer Connor Daniel (Iann Dior, The Veronicas, Demi Lovato), who really helped take it where I wanted to go.”

Ready to hear where it went? We can oblige!

LISTEN: Over a Wintry Soundscape, JASCE Looks for ‘Another Way’ to Love

By this point, we’ve had a chance to get to know Philly-based electronica producer JASCE quite well through her music. Her artful production style — employing rich EDM sounds influenced by her classical training on violin — creates enchanting, thoughtful tunes for the music lover in all of us.

Her latest single, “Another Way,” sets a brilliant tone for this time of year. Hushed vocals sweep in like the winter wind over shimmering, glitchy piano tones and bellowing bass drops, creating an atmosphere as vibrant as holiday lights illuminating the season’s first snowfall.

“The sound is intimate yet large, driving yet vulnerable,” JASCE notes. “It’s a hopeful and determined love song about wanting another way to love you. It’s a celebration of music and living.”

Celebrate life this holiday season with “Another Way.” Get a taste below!

UMC20: Back from the Beach (Sept. 6, 2022)

Summer is unofficially over, and that means it’s time to get down to brass tacks by delivering you some fresh, recently-submitted HEAT.

OK, so maybe one of these songs wasn’t submitted, and is included here simply because I’m vibing on it, post-sabbatical. Which one? Well, here’s a hint: it’s from Dirty Heads’ new album, Midnight Control, which released on August 26 and, personally speaking, is already one of my favorite albums of all time. Sometimes, a new record just hits the spot.

After that, though? You’ll enjoy a multitude of multi-genre flavors straight from our submission form. Hope you’re ready!
