The Rock ‘n Roll Opry Brings Original Music to Lower Broadway

Since we arrived in Nashville about seven years ago, we have known Broadway as a place where musicians go to break in. Seven days a week, you’ll find the city’s working musicians making their living along the street’s iconic strip of honky tonks, performing in 4-hour blocks from mid-morning until the wee hours of the evening.

Some work doubles (and even triples), fielding song requests from tourists who have emerged from all corners of the globe to take in the city’s culture. Once in a while, these performers will sneak in an original tune, giving revelers and passers by a glimpse into their artistry.

On Wednesday nights, however, those who head to the top floor of JBJs on Broadway can catch more than a glimpse. Original music has the floor from 6-10 p.m. during the Rock ‘n Roll Opry, a weekly showcase which gives Nashville’s emerging artists center stage.

Started by a group of Nashville-based musicians, the Rock ‘n Roll Opry gives Nashville’s artists a place to hang out, network and, of course, perform. The house band consists of multi-instrumentalists Mic Guy (vocals/bass/guitar), Rob Talton (vocals/keys/bass), Rory Kennedy (vocals/guitar/bass/drums), and Thomas O’Brian (vocals/drums/bass), who support aspiring performers during the open jam portion of the evening at the end of the night — after a genre-diverse lineup of rising stars have the opportunity to showcase a few of their strongest tunes, to the delight of anyone who ventures up to the top floor in search of something new.

As for the lineup this past Wednesday night, we caught sets from country rock artist and Texas native Hannah Bell, pop rock songwriter extraordinaire J4, and funk-pop powerhouse Ginn. Each artist brought their own brand of thunder to the evening, providing a compelling sample of the talent that resides in every corner of Music City.

LISTEN: Evan Kreutz Watches Love Drift Away Like a ‘Dandelion’ in the Wind

Remember that time you were in love, and it just didn’t work out?

Evan Kreutz does, and he filters that nostalgia through a 2000s pop rock-tinted lens on his new single, “Dandelion.”

Those who find resonance with the emotive alt-rock stylings of bands like Guster and Fountains of Wayne will enjoy diving into this one. From the opening line, “she’s all out of patience,” we can feel a deep sense of longing and regret. With each somber chord, Kreutz wistfully comes to terms with the fact that the love he once held so dear — which provided him with so many beautiful moments and memories — is gone with the wind.

“Dandelion” was produced by Doug Grama and mixed by Ray Martell at Westfall Recording, with Griff McCarthy on drums. Get ready to get into your feelings with this one!

Of all the bangers you’ll find on the first-ever edition of our Poppin’ Off playlist — and there are plenty — we want to dig a little deeper into one that is definitely worth another listen.

Streamers The Band — the orchestral pop project founded by brothers Kie and Bee Kelly — hit streaming platforms back in August with “Don’t Look Back, Love.” A retro-inspired summer anthem, the refreshingly bright single stands out in any season, with shimmering keys and a spirited melody which capture the feeling of falling hard and fast, without a care in the world!

‘”Don’t Look Back, Love’ describes the feelings of first love, and how it separates someone you love from the crowd,” the band states.

The glistening tune is also the one that brought these Omaha, Nebraska natives to prominence. An original demo of the song has garnered more than 1.5 million Spotify streams to date, which let the Brothers Kelly know that they had an idea worth expanding upon.

For our debut EP, we tracked an all-new version of the song, re-recorded with a 60-piece orchestra and full backing band,” they noted.

Don’t look back; new days are love and possibility are ahead. Let Streamers The Band show you the way!

LISTEN: Sid Seth Invites Us to Ride a Different ‘Wave’

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Spooky Season, it’s that it can be fun to put on a mask and pretend to be somebody else.

That makes this the perfect opportunity to share “Wave,” the latest single from accomplished New York-based songsmith Sid Seth. Produced by the renowned Al Carlson (Lady Gaga, Slaters, Roy Blair, Jessica Pratt), this breezy pop tune features clean guitars, a Caribbean-inspired beat, and silky-smooth vocals, as Seth sings of joys of finding temporary refuge from who we’re “supposed to be.”

“(‘Wave’) is about putting on an alter ego for a night and letting that persona take over,” Seth said.

“Wave” is making waves across multiple media outlets in the U.S. and abroad, including Galore Magazine, Ones to Watch, ASCAP NMF, Future Hits Radio UK, and WFUV 90.7fm. Meanwhile, Seth is currently in the midst of a coast-to-coast U.S. tour, with planned stops in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and New York.

Go on — let yourself ride a different “Wave” for a change. Listen below!

LISTEN: Mobley is Haunted by ‘Y’r Ghost’

Acclaimed songwriter Mobley just dropped his first new release since 2022 — and he’s wasting no time taking us on an emotional thrill ride.

“Y’r Ghost” is bubbling over with abrupt twists and turns — both in its sonic landscape, and the mood it serves to create. What begins with a sweet, soulful simmer transforms on a dime into a frantic, up-tempo dash, as our protagonist searches for answers after losing a partner whom he loved intensely.

“‘Y’r Ghost’ marks the return of Jacob Creedmoor, the protagonist from my last record, Cry Havoc!,” Mobley said. “It finds him reminiscing about the night he met the love of his life and mourning her loss, and the fact that she’s fading in his memory. The song’s shifts in mood and energy mirror the turmoil of our lovelorn hero, while the lyrics hint at a larger story still waiting to be told.”

That larger story — a continuation of the themes explored on 7-track Cry Havoc! EP — is coming soon in the form of a science-fiction epic. While we await more details, immerse yourself in the latest chapter!

“Runaway” to the 80s with Lawrence D.

The neon glow of a clear Nashville night has nothing on the shimmer of “Runaway,” the new, 80s-inspired track from Lawrence D.

“Runaway” combines clean, catchy guitar riffs with retro synth tones and Lawrence D.’s silky-smooth vocals, taking us on a dynamic thrill ride that would find itself at home among The Weeknd’s best work.

Seriously… put it up against any track on Dawn FM, and try telling us it doesn’t fit right in. We dare you!

“My producer and I were sitting in his studio in Nashville, TN and he created this nice 80’s track,” Lawrence D. said. “I wrote the record that night. It reminded me of a Red Ferrari drive on the roadside of the beach somewhere in Miami. My other producer added the bass line, and I had the idea to bring the live electric guitar into the fold to give it an electrifying rock feeling. I love everything about this record, and I hope whoever is listening will love it, as well.”

On ‘Crush’, Lips Speak Louder Describe the Rush of Falling in Love

Lips Speak Louder may have a busy fall on tap, touring with Emily Wolfe. However, that won’t stop them from continuing to crank out the tunes.

The most recent? The pop punk anthem, “Crush.” Written by Lips Speak Louder’s Rachel Brandsness and Angela Lese and produced by Wolfe, the new single reminds us what it’s like to be overcome with cautious optimism as we (maybe? possibly?) fall in love.

“(‘Crush’ is about) the incredible rush of emotions you get when you first start falling for someone, and how one unexpected encounter can change everything,” Brandsness said.

Don’t forget: you can see Lips Speak Louder perform “Crush” and plenty of other tunes from their upcoming full-length record on Saturday, October 19 at The Lipstick Lounge in Nashville. Learn more about that here, and check out the latest below!

LISTEN: Linn Holmes Delivers Vintage Feels on ‘Baby Blue’

Linn Holmes is no stranger to the spotlight. Now based in Los Angeles, the Swedish-born singer has shared the stage as a backing vocalist with luminaries such as Orianthi, Robbie Kruger (The Doors), Phil X (Bon Jovi), Cherrie Curie (The Runaways), and previous Australian X-Factor contestant, Julian De Vizio.

Now, Holmes is stepping out on her own. On May 31, she just released her second single.

Titled “Baby Blue,” the new tune is a spirited callback to the upbeat, piano-driven pop of the 70s. Holmes keeps the dynamic flair and storytelling spirit of the era alive, incorporating a potent groove and scorching guitars in support of an ultra-catchy melody.

“The song is a lighthearted pop song about love in a vintage daydream,” Holmes said.

“Baby Blue” was produced by Rev. Tom Chandler, and features the talents of Daniel Jakubovic on drums, guitar, piano and bass. Jenny Dang lends electronic production elements to the track, providing a modern sensibility to this timeless pop soundscape.

LISTEN: You’ll Be ‘Better Off’ After That Breakup

It can be tough to see at first, but the truth is, a lot of breakups are for the best.

New Jersey-based alt-rockers The Break Plans deliver that message in empowering fashion on their latest single, “Better Off” (released May 10). The tune combines scorching guitar work with an anthemic pop sensibility, providing a lift to anyone struggling with what comes next after a relationship.

“Heartbreak is really hard and can be incredibly lonely,” shares vocalist Colton Braun. “I wanted to talk about those experiences so many of us have had. What I’ve learned is that there’s a great deal of freedom that comes from finally letting go. Writing these songs with my band was the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done. I hope our listeners can relate and find comfort in it.”

The single — the first from the band’s debut EP, Mistakes Are a Friend of Mine (due Fall 2024) — marks a watershed moment in the band’s creative process, with guitarist Mikey Strawz noting that the band feels free to create music they love.

“This is our third cycle of releasing new music, and we’re allowing each other total freedom to write the songs that we want to make,” Strawz said. “It’s completely uninhibited and has helped the writing process immensely. After working with so many talented producers (Carl Bahner -The Wombats, Rob Chiarappa – Gray Scale/Jake Miller, Corey Mouch-Knox) and keeping a keen eye on modern pop music, we have a clear direction of what works for us.”
