Beyond the Valley: Foxtrot & the Get Down Gets Their ‘Shine’ On
Fun fact: I’ve been following Philadelphia’s Foxtrot & the Get Down for years. We originally crossed paths back in 2014, in the old days of The Quinn Spinn. We’d play their tunes on the show and, as a matter of fact, they even trekked all the way to North Jersey that June, where we were based at the time, to perform at an American Cancer Society benefit that we produced called “Entertainment For a Cure.”
Fast forward nearly 3 1/2 years, and the band continues to take Philadelphia and the rest of the rock world by storm. They’ve gained quite a bit of regional recognition for their work, as they’ve continued to add new layers to their sound and write great songs — the latest of which, “Shine,” was just released this weekend.
The tune starts with bright, pulsing guitar tones, a pounding bass drumbeat, and the rugged vocals of frontman Colin Budny. From there, it builds up to become a heartland rock anthem with beautiful two-part harmonies and flawless dynamic shifts.
Perhaps the most exciting part of “Shine” begins when Budny and backing vocalist Erica Ruiz join together in an infectious bridge, before giving way to a fiery sax solo clearly influenced by the late Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band.
Listen to “Shine” below, and be sure to keep an eye and an ear on Foxtrot & the Get Down. They’re doing big things!
