Ralph’s Reviews: Maggie Pope and Under the Oak — Doubling Up

I’m taking us down the turnpike to the Philly area for this week’s look into the indie music scene.

My first instinct was to take a good long look at Maggie’s debut EP, “June Tapes”. I first discovered Maggie as part of  “Under the Oak” (Adam Monaco, Chris Peace) and I was anxious to hear Maggie on her own. Her current single, “Rare and Wild” (Sept, 2018), does not disappoint. Her soft, soothing voice and equally impressive guitar skills make this song very easy on the ears. The downside is we’ll have to wait a while to hear more, as this is her only song available at the moment.

So, why did I “tease” you with a single? Well, there’s the debut album from Under the Oak, “Big Sky” (Winding Way Records, April 2018). This full-length, 10-song album has everything you would expect from a folk/bluegrass production. What stands out the most is the sweet harmonies of Adam and Maggie. “Take in the Spring” and “Wandering Around” are two tracks that highlight the chemistry between them and make you want to listen to more. As impressive as her debut single is, her role in Under the Oak is equally important to the sound of “Big Sky.”

You can listen to Maggie Pope and Under the Oak on Spotify or visit their websites, maggiepope.com or undertheoak.com, for more.

Next week, I’ll review new music from Jordyn Kenzie. Make sure you check in!
