Soulful Philly blues rockers Foxtrot & the Get Down have gone from being “Down & Out” to being “Battered and Blue.”

The track has a retro-funk feel, complete with a groovy bass rhythm and tastefully powerful horns that recall a hot Saturday night at the disco. Yet, there’s a modern sensibility to the track that helps it hold up among contemporaries who have flashed a dancier side in recent years (Foster the People and Beck come to mind).

As is standard these days for Foxtrot & the Get Down, vocal duties are split capably between the rugged Colin Budny and the sweet-singing Erica Ruiz, whose combined energy and knack for delivering a hook make “Battered and Blue” a knockout.
