Folk-Punk Meets Synth Pop on C.J. Dunleavy’s ‘Anne’

Philadelphia-based musician C.J. Dunleavy — who is known in regional circles as a music advocate and curator of some pretty cool indie music playlists — also has a knack for songwriting.

Proof of this exists in his latest single, “Anne,” a cross-genre hybrid that combines tender folk with synth pop. This results in some dynamic soundscapes layered underneath a lyric written for a friend who was adopted.

“Anne” starts off with a clean-picking acoustic progression before its poppier sensibilities kick in, letting us know that we’re in for a fun and unpredictable ride. Things take a particularly intriguing turn around the 2:20 mark, when the synths largely strip away in favor of a confident strum and a pop punk-inspired vocal.

Stream “Anne” on Spotify below, and stay tuned on Facebook, because C.J. Dunleavy will be dropping his next single, “The Secret Chord,” very soon.
