Best of 2016: Looking Back, Looking Ahead

To close our Best of 2016 video series (a joint LVU-Dustin Schoof production), Dustin and I each shared our favorite overall moment from our individual travels through the music scene in 2016, as well as what we’re looking forward to the most in the New Year. My responses are below. Of course, you can catch Dustin’s over at DustinSchoof.com. Mine is below.

I say something to this effect in the video below, but it bears repeating: Thank you all for being the motivating force behind all of this. When LVU launched in January, I could not have imagined it taking off to the heights it has reached. Now, I am optimistic that we will soar even higher together in the New Year.

Please be safe tonight, and have a happy and successful 2017.

PHOTOS: Bryan Tuk Complex at Hook (Network Magazine Launch After Party)

After stopping by Hamilton Kitchen & Bar’s second birthday party on Tuesday night to buy what The Groove Merchants were selling, I had time to walk around the corner and stop by Hook, where Bryan Tuk Complex was getting set to play Network Magazine’s launch after party.

I had never been to Hook before, but it was nice to show up and hear some smooth notes that hearkened me back to Allentown JazzFest this past April and May. It was also good to see Bryan — he and his trio (Eric Mintel on keys and Brian Bortz on bass) are as good as they come.

Sunday Thought Series: We’ve Had Ourselves a Month

May has been so busy and exciting that it’s hard to believe that we were in the middle of our first media partnership with Allentown JazzFest only a few weeks ago. We started the month with Scott Tixier in Emmaus, and the festival would continue during the month’s opening week with performances from Steve Coleman and Five Elements, Lucy Woodward and many more.

The fun continued all month long. We’ve seen debuts, international rising stars, industry veterans, and long-time local favorites. We successfully closed the return season – and first on LVU – of our official podcast, The Quinn Spinn, with great hope for the future. And, of course, we met more great people and had insightful conversations that will surely help us all work toward the betterment of our original music community in the months and years ahead.

Through it all, there’s a sense of satisfaction in knowing that so many people in our music community have been positively impacted by Lehigh Valley Underground, both throughout this month and dating back to January. The fact that people are hearing about us on their own – and not just from my incessant, daily social media posts – means that we’ve strengthened the music scene, and that we can only get better from here together.

It should be an amazing summer. A lot of big things are beginning to take shape. Although I can’t talk about them yet, please know that May was just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot more #BuildingBetter where this came from.

Sunday Thought Series: Face-to-Face

I lived in rural New Jersey for the majority of The Quinn Spinn’s previous run. As a direct result, I often found it difficult to get out on the scene on a regular basis. Heading to New York was always an all-day, expensive affair, and constantly being cash-strapped at the time always made it much more difficult. I loved what was going on in Philly, but it was two hours away, and even if I had known about the wealth of talent in my “second home” of the Lehigh Valley, it was still an hour drive at the time.

I knew the whole time that I needed to be out there. I needed to be much more than a talking head behind a computer (or phone, or tablet) screen, and I needed to get out, support local music, and build relationships with the same artists I’d play on our shows every week. Oddly enough, the best way in this digital age to be a resource and build a brand as an indie music authority is to meet people face-to-face. Who would have thought?

I’ve seen this in action ever since moving back out here (a year ago today), and then by launching Lehigh Valley Underground in January. I’ve gone out on the scene more than I’ve ever had the opportunity before.

Getting to at least once show per week is my rule. As a result, I’ve had the chance to meet great people and talented artists whom I now call friends. I’ve had some really cool opportunities – Allentown JazzFest comes to mind – which have helped build the profile of LVU as an emerging player in our local music scene. I would like to think that bodes well for everyone.

Through it all, I just want to express my gratitude for being able to work with all of you to this point. For as busy as life gets, I now know I can count on going out, snapping some photos, and hanging out with some talented folks, to the point where doing so has become ingrained in my weekly routine.

It’s been a blast so far, and I look forward to discovering where the road leads us next.

Hector Rosado y Orq HACHE at West Park (JazzFest at Noches de Ritmo)

Hector Rosado y Orq HACHE’s performance Saturday evening at Allentown’s West Park had it all: singing, dancing, and even an appearance by the ever-elusive sun.

The concert, sponsored by Ola Radio and Spark Orthodontics, was part of a larger event featuring XCAPE Hip Hop Dance Group, HALA, Puertorican Culture Preservation Organization, and the Dominican Folklore Group. As the weather turned more favorable, Rosado and his band took the stage in front of a growing crowd that was very much into the salsa rhythms.

Enjoy our photos of a show that brought people of different cultures together, young and old.

Sunday Thought Series (Saturday Edition): Totally Jazzed

Tomorrow is going to be busy, so I want to make sure I get this out of the way now.

008For more than a week, we’ve been dutifully bringing you the latest from Allentown JazzFest. We’ve seen some top-notch performances, re-connected with old friends, and met some great new people along the way.

I just wanted to take some time today to mention how grateful Lehigh Valley Underground is for the opportunity to participate in such a great, growing local festival. We’ve been welcomed with open arms into another very important, lively part of the Lehigh Valley’s music scene this week, and it has been a phenomenal experience from top to bottom.

003I also hope that the passion behind this blog’s mission has come through in a new way over the past week or so. We want to reach into every corner of our scene and support the many people – not just musicians, but volunteers and industry folks – who strive to make it a better place. It is my hope that our coverage of JazzFest this week opens new doors for all involved, and that we can all continue to work together to strengthen our offerings and make the Lehigh Valley a music destination, based foremost on the efforts of the people who call our region home.

It’s not over yet. Tonight at 5 p.m., we’ll be at West Park to catch Hector Rosado and Orq Hache. Tomorrow at 5 p.m., we’ll wrap things up with The Bryan Tuk Complex at Billy’s Downtown Diner on Hamilton St. Photos and reactions from those shows, of course, will be made available here.
