Sunday Thought Series: The #UndergroundSwell Grows

In three months…

…and we’re just getting warmed up!

When I first hatched the idea for Lehigh Valley Underground, I did it because I believed in the talent and passion of our music community. I knew that our original music scene was on the verge of exploding, and it just needed some unifying forces to make the people aware of everything happening in their backyards.

We have a lot of work still to do. However, I must say that, in three months, I’m impressed with and inspired by how far we’ve come together.

Through Lehigh Valley Underground, artists have become aware of opportunities to perform and have their music heard by local and worldwide audiences. Lesser-known venues have received some much-needed and deserved spotlight. There was always a strong arts community here in the Lehigh Valley, but I would like to think that LVU has made it just a little bit closer-knit. So far, so good – we’re adhering to our mission, and we have big ideas to make this resource even better in the months to come.

Of course, it all starts with the beginning of another week. A new episode of The Quinn Spinn will hit sometime tomorrow and you’ll hear about the week’s Can’t-Miss Shows. In those two instances alone, you’re guaranteed to learn something you didn’t know before.

This isn’t any ordinary week, though. Allentown JazzFest kicks off Friday night with Al Chez & the Brothers of Funk. As an official media partner of the festival, you can be sure that we’ll be at that show and many others over the course of ten days.

Thank you for joining us as our #UndergroundSwell continues to grow. Stick with us, because the best is yet to come!

Bryan Tuk Complex Comes to Allentown Brew Works this Thursday

Like jazz? Free Thursday after work? We have just the thing…

The Bryan Tuk Complex, who were super-stoked to hear perform at Allentown JazzFest, will be performing as part of Allentown Brew Works’ HighGravityJazz Series this Thursday night from 6:30-8 p.m. The band will be joined by DCI World Champion snare drummer, Rob Robinson.

The show’s official Facebook event describes the evening as “controlled, yet funky, chaos” as Tuk’s high-energy ensemble takes the stage just eight days before JazzFest kicks off with a headlining show from Al Chez & the Brothers of Funk. The evening will be emceed by WDIY radio personality, John Dodds.

Tickets are available for $20 at the door and at this link. Not to mention, the show lets out early enough in the evening for you to drive across Allentown and catch most of another one of our Can’t-Miss Shows of the Week, which makes Thursday night another evening full of great live music in our fair Lehigh Valley.

Check out an all-new QSLehighValley tomorrow when we’ll be joined by Bryan Tuk. Bryan will talk to us about Allentown JazzFest, Performing Arts Live!, Inc. and more on SoundCloud, iTunes, and right here on Lehigh Valley Underground.

Lehigh Valley Underground Named an Official Media Partner of Allentown JazzFest

Festival to feature 30+ world-class performing artists and a film festival between Apr. 29-May 8.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Apr. 5, 2016 – Lehigh Valley Underground, a local blog serving the independent music scene in eastern Pennsylvania, western New Jersey and beyond, has been named an official media partner of Allentown JazzFest, a 10-day festival featuring 30+ world-class musical acts to take place from Apr. 29 to May 8, 2016.

Artists performing at this year’s JazzFest will include 5 Time GRAMMY winner Jeff “Tain” Watts, GRAMMY winner Laurence Hobgood, JoJo Mayer, Adam Niewood, Al Chez & the Brothers of Funk, Lucy Woodward, Steve Coleman, Scott Tixier and many more.  There will be educational clinics for high school and elementary students throughout the festival as well.

“We are beyond thrilled to partner with Allentown JazzFest, and to be another avenue by which the hard work, dedication, and musical talent of all involved is recognized,” said Gerard Longo, founder, Lehigh Valley Underground. “We look forward to using our platform to raise our community’s awareness of JazzFest and other great live music events occurring in the Lehigh Valley this spring and summer.”

As part of the media partnership, Lehigh Valley Underground will be on-hand to cover multiple nights of Allentown JazzFest, providing photos, interviews, and concert reviews on lehighvalleyunderground.com. In addition, Lehigh Valley Underground will host Bryan Tuk, founder of Allentown JazzFest and Executive Director and CEO of its parent organization, Performing Arts Live, Inc., on the Thurs., Apr. 21 episode of its official local podcast, QSLehighValley.

In addition to great music, this year’s JazzFest will also feature the beginnings of Allentown FilmFest at the Civic Theatre 514, with three nights each dedicated to a different theme: Blowup: Revolutionary Art Then & Now (Apr. 29); International Short Films (May 1); and A Night with the Experimental (May 3).

“Lehigh Valley Underground is doing a terrific job supporting the performing arts, which is what JazzFest is all about – whether it is jazz, blues, EDM or some of our more esoteric artists,” Tuk said. “I am extremely gratified that Lehigh Valley Underground is going to help spread the word about the world-class performances JazzFest is going to bring to Allentown.”
