LISTEN: On ‘Take Me Back to Austin,’ Jason Boland & The Stragglers Long for Home

It’s a great time of year to think about making a trip down to Austin.

And, if you’re Jason Boland, anytime is a great time to think about taking the trip.

“Take Me Back to Austin” — the final single from Jason Boland & The Stragglers’ forthcoming album, The Last Kings of Babylon — celebrates Boland’s adopted home of Austin, TX, where he met his wife and loves to return after time spent on the road.

“My wife and I lived in Austin when we first got together, and then we moved out into the country in Texas, where it can be pretty boring,” Boland explains. “People expect with how much time I spend on the road that I’d want to come home and kick my shoes off when I finally get a break, but all we ever want to do is head right back into Austin and catch a band.”

The down-home traditional country tune is carefree in its essence. Boland’s gentle, yet robust baritone illustrates a homecoming that feels like home, every time. Beautifully woven steel guitar and fiddle parts add depth to the sonic palette, trading lead duties during a riveting solo just before the bridge.

Alongside the rest of the new album, “Take Me Back to Austin” was produced by the legendary Lloyd Maines, who also produced the band’s debut album, Pearl Snaps. You’ll have a chance to hear it live at select dates throughout the southwest and midwest this spring. Before you do, enjoy it in the here and now!

LISTEN: Midland, Orville Peck Release Interstellar Single, ‘The Hurtin’ Kind’

Certain songs hit us with a feeling of amazement; these are the moments whose timelessness, through any era, nestles into our consciousness and resonates at a purely spiritual level.

It’s hard to say if outlaw country crooner Orville Peck knew he had that kind of moment on his hands, when he teamed up with two-time GRAMMY winners Midland to write “The Hurtin’ Kind.” But, if that was the goal, mission accomplished!

“The Hurtin’ Kind” — included on Peck’s new duets album, Stampede Vol. 1 — made its live debut on Midland’s Last Resort Cruise in April. Bass and hand percussion gently guide us in, swaying with a sensibility that recalls the romantic early days of rock and roll. From there, Peck’s soul-baring baritone makes its way in, with a richness fit for a King. Crisp harmonies and ambient guitar tones enter the scene next, filling out a wondrous, space-country soundscape that shimmers like a starry night over Utah’s dark sky country.

“Orville Peck is a dear friend of ours, and it’s an honor to be on this song with him,” said Midland. “We had a great time debuting ‘The Hurtin’ Kind’ live with Orville on our Last Resort Cruise last month. He’s an incredible performer and singer, and y’all are in for it with this one.”

Agreed. Y’all are in for it. What are you waiting for?

PHOTOS: Native Manor Heavy Hitters at 6th & Peabody

Have you ever been to a writers round where everyone, across the board, was really, really good? We have!

OK, that statement can apply quite a few times over throughout UMC history. However, the most recent example took place this past Wednesday at 6th & Peabody in Nashville, where Native Manor hosted the February edition of their Heavy Hitters round.

We caught (and captured) most of the night. Of course, there was no shortage of country, but this eclectic lineup featured a couple different shades of pop, and even some Latin and worship music.

Below, you’ll find a lineup breakdown, in case you’re looking for some new artists to check out. All of the artists are also tagged in this Instagram post.

6:30 p.m.: Keifer Wiley, Clayton Shay, The Dryes
7:30 p.m.: Noah West, April Kry, Ben Fuller, Noah Sotillo
8:30 p.m.: Sarah Darling, Jimencio, Trevor Martin, Kayley Bishop
9:30 p.m.: Mark Addison Chandler, Rebecca Brunner, AJ Gatio

LISTEN: Rome & Duddy Keep Things ‘Cactus Cool’

19th Century English writer and philosopher John Ruskin was once quoted as saying, “One can’t be angry when one looks at a penguin.”

That quote has nothing to do with what I’m about to review, other than the fact that I feel the same sense of ease when I’m listening through Rome & Duddy‘s new six-track EP, Cactus Cool.

Songs You Should Hear: Changing Seasons, Powerful Tunes

We have new tunes blowing in, like the gentle early-autumn breeze currently sweeping through Nashville.

This week’s Songs You Should Hear lineup features three emotionally-gripping new tracks from female artists. We start by whisking you away to the scenic Pacific Northwest, before transporting back in time to the 1980s — with a twist! Then, we close with a frantic pop anthem about the difficulties of finding love, when we find it hard to love ourselves.

Existential Musings and Exploring ‘Honeysuckle Summer’ with Charles Ellsworth

Earlier this year, Brooklyn-based troubadour Charles Ellsworth swung through Nashville and joined us to record an episode of The Quinn Spinn… and, man, this one is an all-timer!

Of course, we talk about Charles’ new album, Honeysuckle Summer, which features outstanding prog-Americana tunes including “Miami, AZ,” “Max & Geraldine,” and “A White Cross on a Highway.” However, that’s just scratching the surface. What we have here is an insightful, undeniably honest conversation between two 30-something creators. We touch on everything, from life on the road, to the adjustments we make on the creative journey, and the importance of discovering who we are. We even show some love to our high school football coaches, who helped mold us into the men we are today!
