It’s been a little while since we’ve done one of these, hasn’t it?
Yet, with excellence all around us, it’s clear that many of the submissions we’re receiving deserve a deeper dive. And so, today marks the triumphant return of Songs You Should Hear!
Get started with these, and be ready for more on the way, every Friday at UMC!
Artist: JT Loux Song: look into my eyes Genre: Indie Rock/Alternative Why You Should Hear It: The course of true love never runs smooth — and it can be made even more complicated when you’re loving from a distance. Underneath this tune’s prevailing warmth is a clear and present longing, inspired by the reality of “loving someone, but they are 2,000 miles away.”
Artist: Rex & The Rhythm Song: Umbrella Genre: Hip Hop/Soul/Alternative Why You Should Hear It: Who’s ready for some April showers? This tune’s breezy sonic landscape juxtaposes well with its lyrical content, artfully illustrating the conflicting emotions experienced after a breakup.
“‘Umbrella’ is about a relationship abruptly ending, even though the forecast appeared to show clear skies and warm weather,” Rex said.
Fun fact: Rex has had the opportunity to open for artists including Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Ashanti, and Lauryn Hill — and, after opening up this “Umbrella,” it’s easy to understand why!
Artist: Spence Brown Song: By My Lonely Genre: Hip Hop Why You Should Hear It: If you’ve ever dealt with haters, this one is for you. Brown has proclaimed this fiery new track the “anti-hater anthem”; and with how hard this one goes, it might just provide the push you need to overcome doubt.
Brown says, “As an artist, it’s always hard to deal with haters, but if you can remind yourself that what you do is good at the end of the day, you can just laugh it off. Personally, I’ve always had a hard time dealing with haters, so I made this song to remind myself that it doesn’t matter what other people think. I can get this done without their opinions!”
Got something you think we should hear? What are you waiting for?! Shoot it our way, and you could be featured in an upcoming edition of Songs You Should Hear!
The official Wednesday debut of UMC20 gets off a funktastic start!

Having trouble getting on the same page as your partner? If so, we think this will resonate…
Miles Squiers dropped “24 Hours” back in December as a “deep exploration of strained and fragile relationships.” Blurring the lines between acoustic pop and contemporary R&B, this fresh single provides the perfect soundtrack for some late-night introspection, as Squires details the disconnect between a woman with trust issues, and a man who falls short of alleviating them.
The music video — directed by James Gerrard, Squiers, and Josef Lloyd — shows Squiers as a male protagonist who will seemingly do whatever he can to escape facing the uncomfortable tension within his own home. From overworking, to staying out a little too late, his character does whatever he can to delay facing the inevitable questions that await him behind closed doors.
Watch the video below, and tell us if you’ve ever been there before in the comments!
From song to song, and moment to moment, you never quite know where this week’s edition of UMC20 is going to go.
There’s a lot of genre-bending goodness throughout the playlist. You’ll hear plenty of instances where elements of one genre sneak their way into another.
And, of course, there are two bonus tracks, because we’re releasing two episodes of The Quinn Spinn per week now. One highlights the journey of an exciting new artist; while the other, just released today, shows a different (i.e.; the original) side of our Official Podcast. Past meets present, indeed!

If they’re going to call you crazy, you might as well own it.
On her new single, “BURN IT DOWN,”Yarin Glam explores a sense of ownership of the parts of ourselves that are hardest to love. A ethereal alt-pop soundscape — coupled with Glam’s stirring R&B vocals — paint a liberating picture, inspired by the breakup story of her sister and her ex-boyfriend.
“She’s a person that owns herself 100 percent; she loves her crazy side and she’ll always say it,” Glam said. “‘BURN IT DOWN’ is a song where you can own your ‘crazy’ and celebrate it.”
While we were off finding ourselves this summer, Marcus Grimaldi was across the pond, releasing a sensual offering of timeless R&B.
That offering — titled “Forbidden Love” — combines silky vocals, crisp harmonies, and a slow-churning jazz instrumental to provide an honest exploration of sexual and social boundaries.
“(‘Forbidden Love’ is) a love story that explores the boundaries between love on all levels, not being accepted socially or at home, and making up a fantasy to make your world seem OK,” Grimaldi said.
The London native teamed up with producer Joon Lee to bring the single to life. Lee’s shining moment arrives in the last minute, as multi-layered vocals and a sultry sax solo help build “Forbidden Love” to an enthralling apex.
If you want more, Grimaldi has promised us new music in 2024, in the form of a full EP with one new original and a handful of select covers. For now, give yourself a taste of “Forbidden Love” below!
Apologies for the unexpected gap between UMC20 playlists last week. Ya boy has been on a retreat of sorts, shoring up a few things and gearing us up for the second half of 2023 and beyond.
All that means is that there was more to choose from for this week’s edition of UMC20! So, we’ve put together a quality compilation of some of the jams that have been making their way into our world of late.
