Feeling Like a Victim? The Minimum Wage Offers Perspective on ‘Everyone Is’

It’s one thing to have baggage. It’s another thing to choose to live in the suitcase.

Hailing from Southern Ontario, indie rockers The Minimum Wage are here to challenge your victim mentality with “Everyone Is,” a high-powered, guitar-driven anthem about making the conscious choice to push past our traumas.

“We all consider ourselves victims of something — past traumas, the system, perception of reality. It’s how we deal with being ‘victimized’ that defines us,” the band states. “Do you run to social media and desperately seek validation? Do you put your head down and slog out, day after day? Do you use it as a tool to better yourself?”

“Everyone Is” is the first of six new songs coming from The Minimum Wage, all of which were recorded late last year at Unified Recorders Studio in St. Catharines, Ontario. Enjoy it for yourself below!

WATCH: Miles Squiers Explores Fragile Relationships on ’24 Hours’

Having trouble getting on the same page as your partner? If so, we think this will resonate…

Miles Squiers dropped “24 Hours” back in December as a “deep exploration of strained and fragile relationships.” Blurring the lines between acoustic pop and contemporary R&B, this fresh single provides the perfect soundtrack for some late-night introspection, as Squires details the disconnect between a woman with trust issues, and a man who falls short of alleviating them.

The music video — directed by James Gerrard, Squiers, and Josef Lloyd — shows Squiers as a male protagonist who will seemingly do whatever he can to escape facing the uncomfortable tension within his own home. From overworking, to staying out a little too late, his character does whatever he can to delay facing the inevitable questions that await him behind closed doors.

BETHLEHEM, PA: Sounds of the Underground Coming to SteelStacks June 21

Two stages. Eight acts.

One EPIC first Friday of summer.

Underground Music Collective — that’s us! — will return to our homeland of Bethlehem, PA for a summertime party unlike any we’ve ever thrown.

We’ll once again team with our friends at Your Next Favorite Band at SteelStacks, as we present Sounds of the Underground: Songwriters of Eastern Pennsylvania. This special evening full of homegrown talent will take place on Friday, June 21 — the first Friday of summer — beginning at 7:30 p.m.

For this spectacular evening, we’ll be on not one, but both outdoor stages on the SteelStacks campus. The fun begins with a songwriter’s round on the Levitt Pavilion stage — in front of the iconic Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces — beginning at 7:30 p.m. From there, the party kicks into overdrive, with full band performances just across 1st St. on the Highmark Blue Shield Community Stage on the Air Products Town Square beginning at 9 p.m.

Full lineup details will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, mark your calendars and make plans to celebrate the Summer Solstice with us back in the Christmas City!

Oh, and one more thing… it’s free to attend!

WATCH: Caitlin Cannon’s ‘The Alchemist’ Dazzles Us with Melancholy

Our minds can trick us into seeing things that aren’t present in reality. Sometimes, it’s love.

With that, we invite you to dive into the sweet melancholy that is Caitlin Cannon’s “The Alchemist.” On this tender, cinematic Americana ballad, we find that Cannon has mastered the art of self-deception, as she comes to terms with the notion that she has held out for a love unrequited.

Sonically, “The Alchemist” is rooted in wistful country tradition, with nuanced instrumental layers that add emotional depth to the soundscape. In particular, Eddy Dunlap’s moving pedal steel tones illustrate the pain that comes with realizing that the love you feel for a person is not be reflected back, while Ryan Keith’s lush keyboard arrangement conjures a fascination with the dynamics of human relationships.

PHOTOS: Pug Johnson & The Hounds at The Basement

Hailing from the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Texas, Pug Johnson grew up influenced by Americana greats and sounds of the Bayou.

On Tuesday night, we had the opportunity to witness those worlds collide at The Basement in Nashville, when Pug Johnson & The Hounds took the stage. The end result was a fun, 40-minute romp that was part country, part blues, part Zydeco, and all from the heart.

Johnson’s profound, yet edgy lyricism connects with listeners on an authentic human level, while his calm, confident presence serves as a linchpin for the band’s live experience. From there, The Hounds had plenty of room to show off their chops, flowing artfully through a sonically-diverse, well-crafted set fit for the Great American Songbook.

Pug Johnson & The Hounds are back in Texas for a run of shows, before heading back out on the road this spring. Want a look at what you can expect? Look no further…

Diving Into Purpose (ft. Jazzmin Mitchell)

Last month, we recorded a series of Quick Spinn editions of The Quinn Spinn at Helping Our Music Evolve. These short, (mostly) 10-15 minute episodes highlighted creatives in their element, as they shared their current stages of the journey.

Jazzmin Mitchell was first to be interviewed. The co-director of Nashville-based performance art collective, Free Fyre, Jazzmin sat down to talk about her work with the youth in the Nashville community, as well as her own upcoming plans to release music for the first time ever.

Enter Another Dimension with Laney Jones’ ‘Stay at Home’

I’ve got to be honest — what caught my attention first about Laney Jones’ submission of her new single, “Stay at Home,” was the following description, which made its way into the submission form:

Jones’ newest song, “Stay At Home,” released this February is an acid lick taste of where the band is heading. Sonically rich and lofi, it hints of Doolittle-era Pixies without the stale, microwaved mouthfeel of someone trying to reheat the 90s grunge scene. At the core, as usual, it’s their songwriting that begs more from the listener. Using hyperbole and the popular pandemic catch-phrase to question modern man’s true sense of reality and humanity.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! The reverb-rich new tune brings forth the more mellow sensibilities of 90s alt-rock, while a simmering psych-folk ambiance helps to paint an interdimensional sonic landscape.

If you want to experience this one live, you have opportunities coming up across the country. Nashville dates at The East Room and Bowery Electric bookend six SXSW dates in Austin, as well as a Los Angeles date at Gold Diggers on March 21. For now, catch the vibe below!
