Wednesday Wisdom: How to (Finally) Do the Thing

How many times have you wanted to do something, or wanted to chase after a big dream you’ve had, but then you just…didn’t?

Maybe fear was holding you back. Or maybe you were battling procrastination. Maybe you were overthinking yourself right out of the whole thing. Maybe this is something you’re battling right now.

It can be tough to break out of a cycle of overthinking, and feeling like everything has to be perfect before you start doing what you want to do. It can be tough to break out of that fear. But you’ll never get anywhere if you keep getting stuck in the same place.

Sometimes it’s hard to just do the thing.

Below are some of my best tips for getting started so you can finally check that thing off your list.

Ask yourself what you’re most hesitant about

Sometimes when we can’t do the thing it’s because we start overthinking. As a result, a bunch of what-if scenarios might pop up in our heads, further preventing us from moving forward.

Thoughts like “What if I fail?” or “What if I’m making a mistake?” can be pretty daunting, and self-doubt can start taking over quickly. Maybe you find that imposter syndrome is rearing its ugly head and it’s convincing you that you’re neither capable nor worthy of achieving your dreams. (More on how to combat imposter syndrome here).

If fears like these are holding you back from starting, take the time to reflect on what you think will happen if you actually do the thing you want to do. Get honest with yourself. Write it all out. Feel all the feelings.

Sometimes just acknowledging our fears is exactly what we need to do in order to realize that, sometimes, they really aren’t as big as they might seem. Sometimes just acknowledging our fears removes the fear itself and you can get moving in the right direction again.

Take one small step forward…

When we feel really stuck, and like we can’t get going, sometimes it’s actually because we’re feeling overwhelmed.

That thing you want to do? Maybe it seems huge and impossible to you right now, but maybe it will seem more achievable if you break it down into smaller pieces.

Of course, it’s super easy to feel overwhelmed when we’re thinking about climbing a mountain instead of climbing two steps up a staircase, right? So, is there something you can do right now that can be that first step you need to get started?

Are you dreaming of opening a business but can’t even begin to fathom how exactly you’re going to make that happen? Maybe your first step is coming up with your business name. Have you always wanted to write a song but never wrote one before? Find a local writer’s round and get your feet wet that way.

When we can break down our biggest dreams into smaller, achievable goals, and then we achieve one of those goals, it gives us an important sense of accomplishment and fills us with the excitement that’s going to help us to keep moving forward.

Or… take a step back

Sometimes we get so deeply involved and invested in something that we start losing perspective. Small obstacles might start becoming bigger in our minds than they are in reality, and we might start believing that they’re impossible to overcome. Basically, we start psyching ourselves out. Big time.

If you’ve been thinking and thinking and thinking about the thing you’re thinking about doing, take a break and do something different. Get out of your head! Take a walk, watch a movie, go out to dinner with a friend. Anything. It will give your mind a much-needed breather, allowing you to refocus.

Meditate

Meditation is most commonly known as a coping method for stress and anxiety, but it can also be an important tool when it comes to accomplishing our goals and chasing after our greatest dreams.

Taking a moment to ground ourselves in the present moment can help shift our perspective and see that thing we want to do in a different way. Maybe you’ll realize you were approaching it all wrong and you’ll discover a new road to take that will allow you to achieve your goal even faster.

Maybe you’ll realize that everything happens at the time it’s meant to happen.

Maybe you’ll find a new sense of patience that will help you keep chugging along, rediscovering the drive within you to make your dream come true.

It’s natural to feel stuck and overwhelmed, but when there are things you want to do, sometimes it’s difficult to get them done. Don’t let a little hesitation or setback get in your way, because there’s no worse regret in life than not trying. You’ll be so glad you did.

We Broke Into My Sister’s Tutoring Center and Recorded a Podcast (ft. Hot4Robot)

Our final episode before we host Sounds of the Underground at SteelStacks welcomes Alex Radus back to the show, alongside guitarist Dave Cahill. Together, they are one half of Hot4Robot, who are celebrating the release of their new, unplugged live album, recorded at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA last November.

We did this live, which means we had to find a place to record. Fortunately, I knew just the place — and, we may even have a special treat at the end of this one!

Opening theme: REVEL 9 – All I’ve Become

NashLive! Sonic Kaleidoscope Experience Set for July 20

NashLive! is back for the summer, ready to turn up the heat with a multi-faceted live music experience you’ll be talking about for the rest of 2024 — and beyond.

On Saturday, July 20, come to Helping Our Music Evolve (615 Main St., Suite G1, Nashville) to experience the NashLive! Sonic Kaleidoscope. On this night, rising stars in Music City’s pop, R&B, and hip hop communities will come together to present vivid soundscapes and captivating performances.

Performers include…

Shawney Rainne: Originally from the country music genre, she has evolved her sound into soulful pop infused with depth and emotion. Her debut track “Liar” aired on MTV’s Siesta Key in 2020, showcasing her talents to a broader audience.

She founded my Rainne Entertainment, a platform where she channels her passions into dynamic storytelling through music and artistic flair.

Her love for fashion shines through her brand, Alter Ego. She also expresses her creativity through movement, dance, and curating unique experiences, including one-of-a-kind events, directing music videos, and developing innovative performance productions.

Central to Shawney’s work is empowering self-acceptance and expression. Through vulnerable songwriting, she explores themes of healing, love, spirituality, and unlocking one’s potential. Shawney also embraces alter egos that highlight different aspects of her identity. Her goal is to inspire others to trust themselves, embrace failure, and discover their most authentic selves through radical self-acceptance.

Fiona Maura is a dream pop songstress originally from the space coast of Florida, currently residing, writing, and performing in Nashville, TN. Her ethereal sound fuses soulful folk melodies, dreamy textures, and spiritual lyricism. As seen on American Idol, Fiona is a certified sound healer and weaves her sound bowls and healing instruments through her live shows and production. She was runner up for Best Singer-Songwriter in Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville 2022, and performed at First Horizon Park as part of Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville Festival in 2023.

Hew G: Hew’s musical journey began in Detroit, MI, where his parents’ influence introduced him to funk, soul, and gospel. At age 9 in Texas, he found his passion for music through dance. As a member of various dance groups, he showcased his skills on stages and in competitions. Relocating to Nashville shifted his focus to music production, blending nostalgic melodies with hip hop. Beyond live performances, his music has been featured in major TV shows and commercials, including Empire and a Pizza Hut ad, further cementing his impact on both the music and entertainment industries.

Tickets for the Sonic Kaleidoscope go on sale this Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. CT. Stay tuned on Instagram @nashliveshows for updates!

LISTEN: Hannah Geiser Enters the Chat with ‘Exit Sign’

At the top of 2024, we were introduced to Hannah Geiser, who we caught performing at Live Oak Nashville during the first Native Manor Heavy Hitters lineup of the year.

Fast forward a few months later, and the world has now been introduced to Hannah by way of her blistering debut single, “Exit Sign.”

“I do my best thinking and songwriting while driving, and have nothing else to worry about except what’s in front of me,” Geiser said. “I was on a solo roadtrip and kept seeing all these exit signs and thought to myself, “It’s the sign to go. It’s the sign to leave, and it sometimes comes when you least expected it.” I knew there was a story to be told, so I wrote it down in my “hookbook.” A couple weeks later, I had a write with my good friend Allie Roar and pitched the idea to her. We wrote it in one sitting, and the song grew into what is now my debut single!”

“Exit Sign” is a summer scorcher. Instrumentally, the guitar-heavy tune draws inspiration from modern-day greats like Chris Stapleton and Marcus King. Meanwhile, Geiser’s vocal is timeless in its essence, providing a stirring fusion of country, rock, and soul that gives this newcomer significant standout appeal.

LISTEN: Linn Holmes Delivers Vintage Feels on ‘Baby Blue’

Linn Holmes is no stranger to the spotlight. Now based in Los Angeles, the Swedish-born singer has shared the stage as a backing vocalist with luminaries such as Orianthi, Robbie Kruger (The Doors), Phil X (Bon Jovi), Cherrie Curie (The Runaways), and previous Australian X-Factor contestant, Julian De Vizio.

Now, Holmes is stepping out on her own. On May 31, she just released her second single.

Titled “Baby Blue,” the new tune is a spirited callback to the upbeat, piano-driven pop of the 70s. Holmes keeps the dynamic flair and storytelling spirit of the era alive, incorporating a potent groove and scorching guitars in support of an ultra-catchy melody.

“The song is a lighthearted pop song about love in a vintage daydream,” Holmes said.

“Baby Blue” was produced by Rev. Tom Chandler, and features the talents of Daniel Jakubovic on drums, guitar, piano and bass. Jenny Dang lends electronic production elements to the track, providing a modern sensibility to this timeless pop soundscape.

Full Circle Moments on the Creative Journey (ft. Tye Vallone)

The last time Tye Vallone (of The Groove Merchants and T & Emsee) joined The Quinn Spinn, we were based in Bethlehem, PA. Underground Music Collective was still Lehigh Valley Underground. Moravian University — where we recorded in an open classroom — was still Moravian College.

A lot has changed, but we’re coming full circle on Friday, June 21 at SteelStacks in Bethlehem for Sounds of the Underground. So, we decided to chat about it!
