Are We Doomed? Or Have We Yet to Access Our Own Power?

For all of the talk about AI’s industry takeover, and the ways “the algorithm” unfairly stacks the deck against artists, maybe it’s time to ask ourselves a different question…

What if, instead of catering to the algorithm — the latest in a long line of industry gatekeepers outlined in the video I’m about to share below — we focus on the power we have as a community to build authentic relationships with fans, fellow creatives, and our entrepreneurs across industries?

What if, instead of claiming victimhood in an unfair ecosystem (and often, offering no real solution alongside our complaints), we empower ourselves to create a new one?

What if, instead of begging for a seat at “the big table,” we build our own table?

Yes, there are plenty of problems with the ways creatives are regarded and compensated in the business world. That’s because the business world in which we currently reside was not created by us.

When creatives function like entrepreneurs, the power resides in our hands. When we build brands, communities, and new ways of doing business, we find common ground not only with other creatives who have felt our pain, but with consumers who are looking for something that speaks to them more readily than what’s pumped out through “the machine.”

When we treat the tools at our disposal (AI, streaming, social media, etc.) like supplemental tools to create and maintain connections — instead of be-all, end-all solutions that are “supposed to” bring us to virality, fame, and fortune (i.e.; do all the work for us) — we can better manage our expectations, and focus on the real-world actions and relationships that will help us grow our communities and build a more sustainable ecosystem over time.

Instead of relying on the algorithm to make you visible, take it upon yourself to get in front of people. Instead of expecting Spotify and other DSPs to change their tune about royalty payouts and AI-created music, encourage and incentivize your audience to purchase directly from you. Develop ways to make them feel like they’re not just spending money, but investing in a vision for a greater world.

Provide value, and do business while consistently providing that value.

“Business” is not a dirty word. Learning how to do it properly — in a way that provides and increases value for all stakeholders over time — is the key to finally leveling this playing field.

I’ve presented at and attended some of the biggest music conferences in the world throughout 2025, and have had conversations with thought leaders across the creative space. I assure you that, in all corners, we are asking similar questions: how do we give creators the power?

We already have it. It’s time to accept it, wield it responsibly, and remain consistent over time. It’s time to test, measure, adjust, and develop better, creator-centric solutions. I’ll never tell you it’s easy: the creative journey is a long game, and overnight success is fleeting at best, and non-existent in reality.

Would you rather it be easy or impactful?

It’s not about fighting City Hall. It’s about building new cities.

With that, I came across this TED Talk featuring Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler, who offers a solution as to how we can structure our businesses in a creator-friendly manner. It’s already inspiring plenty of ideas for me, and I hope it does the same for you.

Have a great weekend. And, if my rant inspired you to continue this conversation, you know where to find me.

BRANDCAMP Counselor’s Log: Helping Others Helps Us

By showing up for ourselves, we are empowered to show up for others.

When we are empowered to show up for others, we give ourselves more of what we need.

Our first-ever BRANDCAMP from UMC Academy is officially underway. After just the first couple days, I find myself energized by the coast-to-coast creatives who have committed the next six weeks to leaning into the purpose behind their creative journeys. It’s fulfilling to hear that our brief time together is already sparking answers to deeper questions — including why we create, and how each of our creative pursuits can shape a better world around us.

One question I’ve posed to each BRANDCAMPer so far: “What about your creative ambitions is bigger than you?”

That question has elicited some thoughtful responses. In the end, it seemed that everyone landed along a similar thread: our BRANDCAMPers aspire to create something that will not only elevate their own platforms, but will serve as a catalyst for others to lean into their gifts.

Individually, we all have our own reasons for creating. The details and nuances vary, but each of us intrinsically knows — sometimes, beneath layers of societal conditioning — that within our gifts lies the power to make a difference for those like us.

We need community and connection; we need the power to transparently share our perspectives, and find common ground with those traveling a similar road. Regardless of genre, artistic medium, geography, or any other barrier, each of us has something to contribute to the resilient story of the creative class — and ultimately, we are the ones to spark new ideas and conversations that move our world forward.

That’s just one reason why I admire our first class of BRANDCAMPers. They took a chance on themselves, to gain further perspective on how to deepen their connections to their audience, themselves, and each other. By doing this important work, they’re able to create from an even more enriched place, ultimately making each individual’s journey more satisfying.

And, speaking as your resident BRANDCAMP Counselor, I can attest to having a similar experience. Seeing the experience our BRANDCAMPers are having — individually and together — gives me great fulfillment and excitement for what comes next.

Helping others helps us. I look forward to continuing the work.

Coach’s Corner: The Moment That Sparked a Comeback

Pictured: The sun setting behind the Rocky Mountains from the Gaylord Rocky Mountain Resort (Denver, CO).

I need to tell you about my trip to Denver a couple weekends ago.

I was in town to attend the Achieve Systems BizExplosion Conference. Admittedly, I was looking to shake up my day-to-day, and get some perspective on the direction of this platform — which, as you may remember, recently took a brief, yet thorough detour away from being Underground Music Collective.

On Thursday, October 19, I attended the conference’s welcome reception. Upon entering, I sensed pretty much immediately that this was a different room than the ones to which I had become so accustomed. You had speakers, coaches, and entrepreneurs who had reached a levels of scalable, sustainable success that I, plucky UnderDog that I am, still aspire to reach.

That night — before the conference even officially kicked off — I found myself on the receiving end a ton of valuable feedback about the concept, its niche, and ways that it could be better executed. I heard people’s intrigue around the notion of a music industry-centric platform — and what it could do, if properly built, for independent artists everywhere. I learned so much that night (and throughout the ensuing weekend) about exactly how to properly build it, that I’m still combing through and applying the lessons.

And, to be honest, it all felt a bit overwhelming at first.

I left the reception at about 12:30 a.m. when I caught an Uber back to my Airbnb. I explained to my driver, Mateo, that I was in town to get educated about my business, and I was receiving more of an education than I ever could have expected. I also expressed a bit of self-doubt as I digested the lessons, and wondered what it would take to meaningfully level up from this experience once it was finished.

Mateo then told me he was about to restart the song playing in the car. He wanted me to listen…

That song is “Mirror (You Ain’t Know)” by Brian Hyppolite ft. Nelse… and these words were exactly what I needed to hear in that moment, from the opening refrain.

“Oh, you had it twisted?

Oh, you didn’t know that you was gifted?

You ain’t know that stuff you went through just set you up for winning?

You ain’t know that you was chosen?

You ain’t know that you was golden?

You ain’t know you was important, huh?

You ain’t know you had a purpose

Much bigger than anything you ever considered?

Well, I’ma be your mirror
So you can see it clearer…

When we step out of our comfort zones, our minds can play tricks on us. The stories we’ve internalized can delude us into believing that we aren’t worthy, or ready, or “good enough.” These stories will do everything they can to pull us from our purpose, or fool us into thinking another lane is best for us.

That night, the cards of my imposter syndrome were laid out on the table. However, as I listened to “Mirror (You Ain’t Know)” I realized that I — and not the stories — hold the winning hand.

That moment — and the entire experience of that weekend — helped me reconnect with my mission and vision for this platform. We’re here to build something of impact for independent artists, and connect them to the world of entrepreneurship so that they can built their platforms — and lives — regardless of whether they ever receive traditional music industry approval.

In that moment, it dawned on me that there was no better way to do that than to #GoUnderground.

That’s why we’re back as Underground Music Collective. And frankly, it feels damn good to be walking in this purpose again.

Thanks for being here, and stay tuned.
