How To Get Involved in Your Local Music Scene, Pt. 3: Getting Ready to Make Your Pitch

Every musician has a story to tell, and the opportunity to communicate that story to the masses in the digital age. There are countless media outlets โ€“ from independent blogs and podcasts, all the way up to nationally- and globally-recognized publications โ€“ that could serve as a launching pad to build awareness for your artistry. Even so, most artists โ€“ especially those toward the beginning of their creative journeys โ€“ donโ€™t know where to begin.

Thatโ€™s where I come in! As the founder of UMC and the architect of our Perfect Your Pitch course, I have received thousands upon thousands of music submissions over the years. With that, I have teamed up with Music on the Move Studios, compiling my near-decade of experience as an independent media creator to offer you some tips on how to make sure your pitch stands out above the rest.

How To Get Involved in Your Local Music Scene, Pt. 1: Writerโ€™s Rounds

Pictured: Music on the Move Studios co-founder Erin McLendon, performing at a pretty cool writer’s round.

Every Tuesday for the next several weeks, our friends at Music on the Move Studios (perhaps, with a guest author popping in along the way…) will be sharing their perspectives for anybody looking to dive into their local music scene.

The series — How To Get Involved in Your Local Music Scene — is the brainchild of Music on the Move co-founders Erin McLendon and Caitie Thompson, and will provide practical tips to help independent musicians get off on the right foot.

This week, Erin explores a phenomenon near and dear to the hearts of Nashville musicians: writer’s rounds. For the uninitiated, writer’s rounds are…

“Unique experiences where anywhere from 2-4 songwriters share a stage and take turns performing their songs. You start at one end, go to the other, then go back around. Hence, the name Writerโ€™s Rounds.

Whatโ€™s unique about this is that, you get to hear completely original music by the songwriters themselves, as well as the stories behind the songs!”

-Erin McLendon

INTERVIEW: Keeping Music on the Move — Through Education and Community Building

Erin McLendon and Caitie Thompson are the co-founders of Music on the Move Studios. Both Erin and Caitie are music educators — Erin teaches voice, while Caitie teaches multiple instruments — who are passionate about helping budding performers achieve their potential. In addition, Music on the Move’s all-female showcases provide independent artists and small businesses with a chance to build community in a live setting, while Caitie’s Paradox Jukebox podcast gives the members of that community an opportunity to share their stories.

Becoming a Better Singer: Do You Have Enough Breath?

As we pointed out earlier this month, our friends at Music on the Move Studios are running a Back to School special on lessons. When you buy one month, you get the second month 50% off.

If you’re looking for a taste of what you’ll learn about being a better musician, pop over to Music on the Move’s blog. Just yesterday, co-founder and voice teacher Erin McLendon posted a valuable video on the importance of breath to ensure proper singing technique.

In this post, Erin explains how to create a system to ensure that you’re getting enough breath, so that you’re nailing every note and phrase.

What is Womenโ€™s Equality Day & Why it Matters

According to NPR, only 12.7 percent of songwriters and 2.8 percent of music producers were female in 2021.

This alarming statistic shows how far the music industry has to go to achieve true equality.

Today is Women’s Equality Day, and our good friend Erin McLendon (co-founder of Music on the Move Studios) shares why it is important for those in the music industry to acknowledge the continued battle for equal rights — for reasons that stretch far beyond music.

Get Erin’s thoughts on the Music on the Move blog, and don’t forget to get tickets to Music on the Move’s next showcase — featuring an all-female, all-LGBTQ+ lineup — at The East Room on August 31.
