The First-Ever UMC Weekly PodGuide!

In case you didn’t know, we have an official podcast. Not only do we have an official podcast, but a lot of our friends have podcasts, too, full of insightful conversations and witty banter around music, creativity, and life itself.

So, we got to thinking: what if we provided a weekly guide highlighting these podcasts, to give the people something to look forward to? Just like that, the UMC Weekly PodGuide was born!

To start, here are a few episodes worth your drive time — all of which are set to drop this week!

Shirtless Scotty and Getting Real About Causes (ft. The OG Quinn Spinn Family)

The real question is not whether Scotty does this episode shirtless. It’s how many members of the OG family spend the episode partially nude — and on 6/9, no less!

It’s not all fun and games, however. After the clothes go back on, a discussion about the causes we support takes a serious turn, and we look to use our usually-silly platform to make the world a better place.

Finding Support from the Indie Music Media

Musicians: whether it feels this way or not, opportunities to be seen and heard are all around you. I would know – I happen to run an independent music publicationa podcast, and an event production company. So, when Luke Holden and I divided up the articles for Muze’s “10 People Musicians Need on Their Side” series, I laid claim to the “Media Supporter” archetype right away.

What I didn’t want to do, though, is just have this be an op-ed about all of the things I look for when considering whether to feature an artist or their music. So, I received an assist from a couple of my peers in the industry for their takes on what they’re looking for, where they find new music, and other tips and tricks that will help you identify the right opportunities.

Using Art to Affect Positive Change: An Inspiring Conversation with Ken Newman

Powerful. Inspiring. Insightful. All of those words are fitting when describing this conversation with Ken Newman. Ken is a musician, actor, comedian, photographer, magician, and all-around good human being whose new album, What Am I Afraid Of?, tackles modern political and social issues head on.

Beyond the music, Ken is known for his charitable spirit. His charity, Blanket the Homeless, has provided care packs to between 8,000 and 9,000 unhomed individuals and families in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, the organization’s eponymous album features contributions from Grammy-winning artists, notable producers, and many more. Ken’s passion for helping others comes through in this raw, vulnerable conversation which is sure to uplift.

Who Were You Before the Stories? (Solo Mission #10)

This past Friday, I had a chance to reconnect with the root of my passion for music and live performance by attending The Mixtape Tour with New Kids on the Block, Salt N Pepa, En Vogue, and Rick Astley.

The experience brought to mind a broader question: who were we, and what were our passions, before the world got in?
